My best friend was killed in Iraq on Dec. 10. At his funeral we lined up flags from the church to the gravesite, we had a huge flag hung from the city fire trucks that he was carried under. All this stuff was done to honor him. But Why did he have to die to be honored so greatly? Why don't we do this for our soldiers every time they come home from war??? They should feel that honor while they are alive, not after they are killed.

You are absolutely right! Now you didn't say what country you are from but i assume the US. I have a nephew who spent a tour in Iraq. He lost several friends while pulling his duty there. BUT..he insist it is still the right thing to be there. At this point he is training other soldiers for the war there. I think every soldier, whether in Iraq or elsewhere should be honored. I was also in the military during the last years of Viet Nam. So what say we all honor every military person? Declare a special day to be honored here in the US. Not just Memorial Day or Veterans Day..but a day for all the ones out there right here and now who are doing their duty.

First off, let me just sorry for the loss of your friend. But hopefully he was honored in just fashion as the true hero he was. Honoring a fallen soldier serves two purposes: one, to honor a fallen soldier for the ultimate sacrifice he/she made in service to the defense of their country, and two, to provide closure to the living relatives and bestow some small token upon them for that sacrifice.

Just remember, a soldier does not always have to die to receive a higher award. there are many medal of Honor recipients still alive today that were recognized for their service above and beyond the normal call of duty. We also have special awards that are given out periodically to recognize a soldier/airmen that is a cut above the rest.

Every soldier/ariman would love to be honored but, there are way too many. But to honor the one who gave his life......no greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than that he has given his life for his country.

You are speaking of a very traditional ceremony that honors fallen dead. I have 8 years active duty service and two wars in my young life (38). Soldiers are honored constantly with award ceremonies, promotions, right arm nights ,etc.

Unfortunately, the major ceremonies like burial get more press, but I am here to tell you I felt and I know my soldiers felt very proud to receive our medals and awards in formation with band presented by a then 2, now 3 star general.

At least the soldiers/sailors/Marines/ airmen of today don't get spit on & assaulted at the airport like we(Vietnam vets ) did. This country wants all the freedom in the world, but is content to let everybody else cover the expense. As long as it's not them or their children at the pointy end of the stick, service members will always be treated like servants & ignored until they are killed in action or even worse, are accused of some offense against the "innocent" civilians of the middle east.

You are right. They should have a crowd waiting for them at the airport. All soldiers take that risk and all soldiers leave their families. That is a major burden that they are carrying for all of us and it should be honored and not after they have made the ultimate sacrifice, but because they put themselves in the position to ultimately be sacrificed. Kudos to you!!!

We should honor each and every one of the brave men and women who serve us in such a horrible and dangerous place every day! But I don't see anything wrong bestowing special honors to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

I am very sorry for your loss.

Yes, its a sad thing to wait until one is dead to honor them. I think it falls back into the "Ultimate sacrifice category" You're right they should all be honored while they are alive. America's military are the biggest heroes of all! God Bless our troops!

Well, I would also like to know the answer of this.
The truly sad part are the Liberals who have anti-war rallies at fallen soldiers' funerals. Nothing can say "communist" more than that.
