I recently bought this cage (http://www.chichomedecor.com/product_info.php?products_id=6534). It is made from wood, with vertical bars 1/2" apart. It has two swing-out doors, hardwood (unpainted) perches which allow for ample flying distances, and a bottom tray which slides out. It's 24" wide by 13" deep by 24" tall, not counting the vaulted top. Other than difficuly keeping it clean, do you see any problem with using this cage for a pair of canaries?

The bars in the vaulted top are all 1/2 inch apart as well, so there is no danger of strangulation. I painted the cage again myself with suitable paint.
I have since gotten pair of female canaries, and so far so good. Cleanup has been easier than expected, the poop comes right off, without stripping the paint! Thanks everyone for the input.

Oh yes, and the size has been more than enough as well. They have plenty of flight space, and never crowd each other. 5 square feet works well for a pair!

*I should have written 'cubic feet' not 'square'.

The major problem i see with this cage is the paint. While I doubht those birds are going to chew on the paint, bird poop can sometimes be like acid and eat right through whatever it is that it lands on. When you go to clean that cage it is going to start stripping off the paint and if it flakes and the birds eat that it could be deadly to them. Also, without knowing exactly what type of paint was used to paint that cage, you will not know if it is toxic to the birds or not even dry.

The other thing I would be concerned about after looking at the pic again would be the bars at the top of the cage. It is very difficult to see in that picture, but if those bars spacing start out larger at the bottom and grow closer together where it meets at the top you can lose birds like that. Most bird cages that are meant for birds do not have bars like that anymore, due to birds hanging themselves to death from them.

I personally would not put any live birds in that cage, washing it is more than likely going to warp the cage itself and as stated above it will start stripping off the paint.

Good Luck

Btw..Any cage you purchase you will more than likely have to remove the birds from the cage in order to clean it. Just some FYI.

The size is great!! The cleaning of the cage is going to be some what hard though!! the only way you are going to be able to clean it is to take it outside and hose it off! This would mean having to take the birds out of the cage while cleaning and while waiting for the cage to dry! Hope this helps! Might be better to buy an better cage!

its a beautiful cage thats sure and for 1 canary it would be great but for 2 it will be a bit cramped cos they need a bit of exercise to be healthy. they will live in it but have more chances of getting ill ok better buy a commercial one which is around 2ft x 1ft x1ft ok

Not at all, they don't chew on the cages because they don't have the right type of beak. Though cleaning it will be pretty hard, good luck with that!

This cage looks great. I'm sure your canaries will be very happy living there.

Seems to be a dreamhouse, but yes, when you go to clean it, it will be a nightmare. :)
