my English bull dogs was licking and nuzzeling my american bull dogs side? It was a very odd display as this has never happened before.

Some dogs can actually smell tumors, whether they're cancerous or benign. Also, they could simply be showing affection to one another.
My favorite reason is you dumped syrup on him. ^.~

somtimes they sniff each other to see who it is, were its been, how old it is and so on, they do it for info on the other dog in other words.

they also do this to find out what gender the other dog is.
