Most cities have Park & Recreation departments that have fun "Mommy & me" classes where you can do everything from gym classes to sports lessons. It would give you a good opportunity to connect up with other mom's and perhaps make play dates for your kids.
Plus you might even look up "Mom's Club". They have many play groups and activities that would be perfect ways to find same aged toddlers for your son to meet.

We live about an hour out of LA.....
Check out a local "My Gym" for children up to 12yrs. There's great classes. Also "Gymboree" activities and classes.
My daughter and I attended a "Mommy & Me" Playgroup through our city Parks and Rec once a week, which turned out to be a wonderful experience for us both to meet new friends.

Join a gym, i go to 24 hour fitness and they have a play room with a bunch of kids.
