Not only does it vary by state, but it can vary from one school to another. Generally speaking you need about 20 which means that you need to get about 5 each year. There are electives and extras that you can get. You must have the required courses though, and even if you have enough credits, if they are not from the required courses then you still cannot graduate.

States set the minimum number of credits and required courses needed to graduate from high school. Local school boards may set a higher number or more required courses; but never less of either than those mandated by the state.

I'm pretty sure that sort of thing varies by state, and ther are also several types of diplomas you can earn, depending on the number of credits you graduate with.
