The need is just as great today for God in moral humanist philosophy. The fact that many consider the rules restrictive is probably a reflection that they don't understand the societal and personal ramifications of breaking the rules themselves. Many religions fill themselves with pompous individuals who can cut off reason easily for simplicity of translation. It may well be these individuals and their doctrines that push people away from God.

No, people were against God before the pantheon of organized religions.

Athiests are athiest because they choose to believe that.

A christian that knows the bible (unlike the majority that only know preachers) cannot be shaken from the knowledge they acquired.
Similarly, one would be hard-pressed to convert a mulsim that has been indoctrinated with the koran.

While humanity has definitely imposed many many rules and regulations to serve God, God too has imposed moral rules and obligations upon all humanity.

God asked Cain "Where is your brother Abel?"
Cain answered "how do I know, am I my brother's keeper?"

We are each other's keepers. This is a moral law. To love one another.

In most cases, it's a result of researching the origins of the religion itself. I can't speak for everyone else, but I studied religion in the hopes of finding some evidence that would support my beliefs (I was a Baptist at the time)

The more I learned, the clearer it became.

That certainly helps to open one's mind. If you've been told you're going to hell for doing something that's perfectly normal, it opens your mind to question what the heck they've been preaching.
