Generally speaking, free weights give better results because you're not relying on a machine to steady or move the weight for you, so it's all on you. Having said that, however, it's better for beginners to use machines unless you have the assistance of a certified personal trainer who will show you how to lift with proper form (READ: Do not trust your average gym mook or your buddy who is a weightlifter -- chances are he/she isn't doing every exercise 100% correctly).

If you are not experienced with the free weights or are relatively new to the whole gym thing - I would say machines. they promote good form which you need. They also help prevent injuries. So unless you have an experienced person working out with you, or are very experienced your self, I would use the machines.

Free weights are used to build lean muscles, where as machine stations are more to "bulk up" if thats what you wanna call it.
free weights, (particularly lighter ones) are usually used in pilates and such, for lean muscles. if your going for great big muscles...work on machines...
not saying machines are bad, this is just what i think their purpose is.

I find free wights work better becasue your making more of an effort. When you use machines you dont push yourself to the fullest like when u use free weights.

free weights you can only push yourself as far as you can with out having someone there to keep things safe...but if you are going to be alone the majority of the time a machine is better and you and push yourself harder with all the safety there for you....

It's not or. It's both. Use both. The idea is to combine them into a routine that gives you a whole body workout.
