It is a roman death symbol. Jesus and many others died on the cross. It means nothing,

When Jesus tells us to take up our cross he, he means to suffer as he has suffered, and nothing more.

The cross is one of the most universal symbols in the human library. The earliest (Christian) form was the Chi-Rho (X with a P over it), which stood for both "Chrestus" and "Christos." The former was a pagan term for the goodness of God, the latter was the title of Jesus Christ. The Christian Cross was also employed by the ancient Egyptians to represent salvation, and the ankh, as a modified form of the cross, was used to represent life.

Before Christ died on it, it was the most degrading form of death (Romans were never crucified, they only crucified others). After Christ died, it became a symbol of Christ's death and resurrection. Some Christians also move their hand on their head, stomach and shoulders to form the cross sign.

That's just how Romans crucufied people. The cross itself means nothing but death without Jesus. It's what Jesus did on the cross that gives it meaning. The cross represents His sacrifice for mankind so that we can be forgiven and go to heaven. It represents His selfless love for us. It represents our hope of being able to see Him in heaven one day, because of what He did.

If you look at the shape of the cross, it symbolizes the connection from heaven to earth - God reaching down to earth from heaven.
The cross bar represents how wide his love is for us. He stretched out his arms and said I love you this much.
