I would not bring Travelers checks because the number of places you can cash them are somewhat limited. The Atms work fine and that's what we use all the time from China to Indonesia. There are usually not any fees from the ATM, but your home bank will probably charge you (ask before you come). If you have a visa or MasterCard debit card you will have no problem also getting 'advances' from any of the banks, just bring your passport for ID. Also most of these went through our accounts as purchases so we didn't even pay fees for it. If it's a regular ATM card just make sure it's a PLUS or Cirrus (plus is better) look on the back. MasterCard will charge you a small fee to convert (like .03% or something) and I think they are also charging an additional small amount in Thailand right now. Bangkok, Bali, Singapore and Hong Kong are very modern and connected. If you go to Cambodia or some of the less developed countries ATM access will be limited but most hotels will do cash advance off you credit cards, including the MasterCard and visa debits. I would bring maybe $40-60 in cash if you are concerned, new $20s in good condition (not torn or written on) are best and you can change them at the airports or banks. We have found the airport exchange rates to be competitive.

It may not be the best way but it is a sure way to get money. If you can bring US dollars and exchange them at a bank. US dollar 100.00 get you the best return. Any time you use a ATM you have a service charge plus a maxium amount you can take per with draw. Anyway if on a credit card then you have a 20% charge per withdraw. Keep it simple cash is always the best. If short on cash use the ATM but remember the service charge.

Anything works in Bangkok. Trevellers cheques can be cashed in hotels, banks and money changers, ATMs with international network like plus, interlink or meastro work perfectly well. Credit card can be used widely same as in New York and London. Bring a little banknotes and exchange some for petty cash at the airport for taxi fare and small spendings.

You get better rate withdrawing through the ATM. Save the hustle of converting every now and then as you take out in local currencies. This will work for most of the countries you are travelling to. Though I will advise you carry US$ in Bali to get better rate and also to avoid the bank area.
Save on commission on traveler checks too.

I can only tell you about Bangkok, I live here and only use my ATM for cash ($US). You get the best rate and no fees. I am sure those other cities have ATM services available.
