any ideas on what this is or how to quell it..?

drinking alcohol - 2 diff. scenarios :) not @ same time.

Hard to say. Drinking what? Alcohol? Somehow I doubt that's what you mean, though. This may be simply a lack of oxygen getting into your lungs; a lot of people, myself included, often fail to take deep enough breaths when running. The secret is to properly exhale. See if pushing all of the air out of your lungs helps. If not, and if this seems more serious, go see a doctor.

If you are saying that you have bad pains on your left side after drinking alcohol, then you went running and it still hurts you may have a problem. If it hurts really bad to take a deep breath, and it hurts worse when you move or do anything then go to a doctor. That just happened to me and it was pancreaitis. No good
