My parents have an old (12+ years) cockatiel who has eye issues. It seems as though the inner part of his eye socket is slightly "puffy" (the part that actually holds the eye inside the socket). He's had this problem for a few years, and he tends to stick his whole head in his food bowl when he eats. I'm constantly cleaning food out from around his eyes. He can see just fine and seems to be in no pain, but I was wondering if his puffy eyes are a symptom of his eating habits, or does this sort of thing happen often in older birds?

Your bird is only middle aged.Cockatiels live to 25 to 30 years old if cared for correctly. My two tiels sit right in their food bowls and eat with their heads right in the food. It's normal. If your bird's condition worsens, seek out a good avian vet.Good luck.

Well, a lot of time has past and whether the cause was trauma or an infection. Either way, it has resolved by now with what seems to be blindness in the affected eye. With one functional eye, depth perception would be impaired so that seeds in the eyes would happen often. Have a tweet year and thanks for being so caring.

If this bird has had this problem for years now, then it sounds like an old injury to me. I say keep doing what your doing to make the bird as comfortable as you can. Or try taking it to the vet to see if it needs a caterac removed.
