So instead it happened by province. Prince Edward Island enacted prohibition in 1900, followed by Alberta and Ontario in 1916, and Quebec in 1918 and other provinces during the period as well. Quebec was then first to repeal in 1920 because they only wanted it to last through the end of WWI. Alberta appealed along with Saskatchewan when they realized it was useless to prohibit alcohol use. Prince Edward Island lasted all the way up until 1948!

The Canadian Mounted police did what they could to prevent bootleggers from smuggling alcohol. But it was legal for Canadians to buy booze in Canada. It was not legal to bring it over the boarder. Canada was a major source of alcohol to the USA.
