You seam to have some real confusion going on in your mind. I doubt you will get anything more out of my response then from the last "Mormon" you talked to or "had preach to you".
Use the link I posted as a source for the official answers, with a few mouse clicks you will find find answers to everything except the Cadillac converter issue you mentioned.
First, the reason to not partake of coffee or traditional tea's is in obedience to the Prophets directions. I personally know Mormons who fought in Nam as foot soldiers, walking and fighting in the jungles. I was to young for that war myself. I do not remember names very well, I wish I did.
I am not aware of any money received by the church from the Government. Our donations fund the church.
As for Elder Babee, I think your making that one up, but often members of the church do choose to leave, that is their choice. I truly doubt you had any real influence to cause a Elder choose to leave.
Have fun doing real research on your concerns about the "Mormons". Your research will be much less confusing and more fruitful using the authorized web site in the source list, rather then the many sites that try to distort the churches teachings and doctrine's.
May God Bless you!

B Jones really set it right.

My father in-law served on the ground in Vietnam, because of his experience he was diagnosed with post traumatic disorder. If i gave you his name he could name a few more. If you a vet I'm sure you like war movies, check out "Saints and Soldiers". To keep it unbiased and solicitation free they never mention the churches name. But, there are plenty of clues to understand his faith. I'm in the army myself, so I'm sure you'd find it very interesting to know that Mormons have been in EVERY major war since it was founded, and have played huge roles. It is very possible there are some in the CIA, I wouldn't doubt it. because not only do members have a great chance to learn another language on missions; some of the strict enforcing laws and standard they have to live by can be a cake walk by example to the church. OK, that's a bit extreme but the point is still that it's easier for a Mormon

Do you have proof that the church receives funds from the government? All funds for church run activities are paid by donations, The church does make small profit in some areas like food only to pay for church employees, Top church officials are not paid by either funds. in fact they live off of retire and/or current occupations.

As for your elder, I have seen and heard missionaries that do leave the church, but it's rarely do to a contact like yourself. Usually it's because they started a mission in hopes of finding a testimony, but only finding it harder to gain one. You may have had a small influence but I doubt he left because of you.

Good luck in your searching
