Advantages are power (in some cases) and people not being flooded out of their homes.
One of the disadvantages is that it can cause erosion. The reason South Louisiana is losing land yearly is because the Mississippi is dammed where it leads into one of the major distributaries. Silt, sand, clay, etc can't get from the river to the earth where it once deposited during seasonal yearly floods.

Somebody hasnt been readin there science book. Try researching buddy.
In addition to the water they provide, dams also provide energy in the form of electrical hydropower. According to the World Bank, hydropower constitutes 13% of electrical power in the United States, 99% in Norway, 75% in New Zealand, and 70% overall in Latin America. The U.S. hydropower industry promotes hydropower as a clean, renewable, reliable energy source that produces 19 gigawatts of electric power annually worldwide. Industry figures say that the U.S. annual capacity of about 92,000 megawatts produces as much electricity as 500 barrels of oil or 150 coal power plants, and prevents the emission of over 200 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Diving and recreational fishing are scarcely concerns for the majority of people in developing countries, however. What they need is clean, potable water. By some accounts, an estimated 1 billion people in the world do not have access to potable water. And that means that reservoirs are needed, Eiker says. "You can obtain water directly from a big river, like the Ohio or the Mississippi, where there's enough continuous flow. But most major cities get their water from reservoirs created by dams."
Dam opponents have seen many victories recently. In the United States, dam-building decisions are becoming increasingly public.

The advantages include generating power, controlling water flow to accomodate a human population's requirements, and creating a lake or resevoir where one is desired. The disadvantages include disruption of a natural habitat, flooding of lowlands that adversely affect the human population, elimination of soil enrichment by silt, and the possibility for catastropic flooding in the event of a dam failure.

Dam : A barrier constructed to contain the flow of water ,of any river etc.
we can distinguish this problem on 1social, 2economic & 3 Naturel/climate affect
1.Social
#Advantages :
1 Once the dam is built, the hydro energy is virtually free.
2. some time it protect us from flood and by controling the water flow it can distributed drought areas.
3 water is life----So new colonies and villages created near of a dam.
#Disadvantages:
1.New dam project can also impect on villages near of it.Like Narmada Dam. India
2.since river flow from one country to other like bramaputra a barrier on it can cause water problem. But United Nation create treaties & pacts on making new dam.
3.Finding a suitable site can be difficult - the impact on residents and the environment may be unacceptable.
2.Economic
#Advantages:
1. creating new jobs/agricultural lands
2. prevent the losses($) by floods
3. Electricity can be generated constantly in safe rather nuke power stations
# Disadvantages :
1Dams are extremely expensive to build and must be built to a very high standard
2 Huge rehabalation cost for people.
Nature/Climate effect :
#Advantages:
1.it can save lifes from naturel forces
2.green- protect growing desert or drought areas
3.large dams become tourist attractions.
# Disadvantages:
1 geological damage : the building of the Hoover Dam in the USA triggered a number of earth quakes and has depressed the earth’s surface at its location
2. alters the natural water level :the building of the Aswan Dam in Egypt has altered the level of the water table. This is slowly leading to damage of many of its ancient monuments as salts and destructive minerals are deposited in the stone work from ‘rising damp’ caused by the changing water table level
3. Most importent it can destroy forest, wild life and numareous naturel treasure.

Dams are usually utilized as temporary water reservoir.. being the container of water which usually cames from rivers, lakes and mountain sources and reserve it for future usage depending on the demand of water utilities or hydroelecric plants. But dams modify the natural set-up of the ecological niche which eventually alter the environmental set-up of the vicinity. This may also cause devastation of nearby towns whenever the dams eventually breaks down when it reaches its critical level. This usually happens when typhoons or continuous heavy rains occurs.

adv: ~provides enormous supply of water to one side of the dam
~ this water supply level can be controlled by using lock
gates.
~as a result flooding is controlled and dry areas get water 4 irrigation, drinking, domestic etc. purposes.
~helps in generating hydal power, which is pollution free.
disadv: ~people living in the adjoining ares are displaced and lose their land.
~can harm the ecology of the surrounding area.
~leads 2 soil erosion.
