Going to New York soon (wwooo hooo!) And was wondering if I should just go passed it on the free Ferry or if you can go to the top is it worth it?

You can't go up to the top since 9/11.
You can go into the base, but no further. If you want to book in advance.

You can't go to the top but just to the base. There there is a clear ceiling and you can look up to view the inside of the statue. We enjoyed it and did get some great pictures from walking around outside the statue. If you do decide to go visit the Statue of Liberty, security is even more tight than airport security. You need to remove all jewelry, jackets, belts before going through the metal detector. You also pass through a puffer machine that I think checks for explosive materials. Also, when purchasing your ferry ticket to the Statue, only so many passes are given out to go on the tour inside. We lucked out and got the last ones for the day. Have a good time in New York - it is a lot of fun with so much to see.

They no longer let you to the top. And to be honest a trip to Liberty Island is really not worth the time and money. The best view of the Statue of Liberty is from the Staten Island Ferry, which is free and a lot of us New Yorkers showing friends and family around will take that as an atlernative...it is less of a time and money commitment. You just take the ferry to Staten Island and immediately come back. But it is good for pictures with the Statue in the background, etc.

Best of luck,

Stick to the Staten Island Ferry. It's free and gives you the best views of New York City from the water, as well as the statue as well as a bit of Ellis Island and Governors Island
