Click the "Insert" buttom, located above the "delete" button. At the bottom of the screen, when you're in Word you should see "OVR" that should NOT be highlighted. It means insert over. You usually use this when you're typing over a document. Clicking the insert buttom turns this function on and off.

The Insert key toggles between "insert" meaning it only inserts new letters when you place your cursor in a specific location, and "overtype" i.e., it starts typing over the characters already in that location. If you look on your status bar (at the bottom of the window where it shows what page you are on, etc.) when you are in Overtype mode, OVR appears in dark letters in the middle of the status bar, otherwise it is grayed out.
If you hate this function and frequently turn it on when you do not want it, you can disable it.
Choose Tools>Customize
Click the Keyboard button (Lower portion of dialog box)
On Left Choose – All Commands
On Right Choose – Overtype
Click Insert
Click Remove
Click Close TWICE
This will permanently prevent the Insert key from switching into Overtype mode.
As noted above, Overtype is on the status bar at the bottom of the document, and you can always switch between Insert/Overtype by double clicking it the status bar.
(Also –be sure to save changes in box has Normal.dot in order to apply this to all new WORD documents.)

The "delete" command button on your keyboard has been pressed. With this command enabled, whenever you go back and type additional characters in a line where type already exists, the existing type will be deleted, or written over. With MS Word open and a document on the screen, if you look at the bottom of the screen in the gray toolbar you'll see the word DELETE in black type. When you disable the DELETE command, this word goes gray.
To disable this command, just press the "delete" button again.

Click "Tools" then "Options". Click the "edit" tab. Under 'editing options' uncheck the box next to "overtype mode". My version of words keeps checking this box by itself every so often. I get this same problem in Yahoo email and Yahoo groups, but I can't figure out how to turn it off other than signing off and signing on again.
