You should ask your doctor about this. They can help you to go on a cheaper prescription. Don't be afraid. Doctor's have to work with you on this.

Try the naturals first: Chamomile Tea, Lavender (soaps, shampoos, candles, air fresheners, incense, linen spray, body spray, lotions, etc.). Sleepytime Extra Tea with Valerian (available at Health Food stores, grocers, pharmacies and Walmart). Get enough fresh air and exercise during the daytime, and eat a healthy diet absent of caffeine and alcohol. Valerian supplements, and Melatonin supplements work well for many.
Don't forget about prayer and/or meditation.

Don't buy anything online (prescription or otherwise) as sometimes you incur charges you had not been told about--and sometimes the pills never arrive.

If you have health coverage, medicaid, etc., you can go to a doctor and get a prescription--though, it will be short-term only, as sleep aides are addicting. You may be referred to a shrink (which can be good, they are better at keeping the prescriptions coming).

If your sleeplessness is due to anxiety or depression, you may be prescribed meds for one or both of those conditions. Usually they will help you to sleep as well. Just take as directed, and don't stop taking abruptly. The old antidepressant, Elavil (which comes in strengths from 10-150 mgs), puts me to sleep--and a month's supply is less than $10.

I just heard a great sleep trick. As you lay in bed breath in and then out to the count of 3, then again, but to the count of 4. Continue on to 15, but very few get past 10.

You might also have good luck with affirmations. As you lay in bed, repeat to yourself "I lovingly release the day and slip into peaceful sleep, knowing tomorrow will take care of itself." As you go through you day, try to repeat as often as you can (in your mind or aloud) "It is getting easier and easier for me to fall asleep at night."

Prescriptions can mask a problem in the treatment process (hence your continued need for the product), but if you do not get to the root causes of the insomnia, your body will come up with another way to get your attention through discomfort. I believe that health problems are caused by our emotional habits and thought process. I think that Insomnia is caused by worry over life - not trusting the process of life, fear that it will all fall apart if you relax for a moment or plain old guilt. Try to release these habits with the affirmations above for 2 weeks and see if you don't see a difference. Cost nothing to try, even while you are on the ambien. If it works you will find you need the ambien less and less until you just forget about it all together.

Peace!

Hi there. I am currently taking trazodone to battle with anxiety. It is an extremely powerful sleeping aide. I take one at night and I am in bed in about 30 minutes, you cannot fight the sleep. I pay 10 dollars for a one month supply. I do not know if you would be able to take it if you do not have anxiety problems. Also, I have heard that insomniacs will not benefit from medicine, only natural sleep. I am not an expert that is just what I heard. However, the trazodone works like a charm. Happy snoozing.

Some people respond well to taking a few Dyphenhydramines (the main brand name is Benadryl). I know these are not prescription drugs. Personally, I enjoy eating a small snack along with a glass of milk shortly before going to bed. I've also heard a few people comment that Tylenol PM helps them call in the Sand-Man.

Melatonin, it is an herb and inexpensive. You can buy it over the counter. Try taking 1/2 pill at first; if that doesn't work, try taking 1 pill each night. That should work, but if it doesn't try taking 2 pills. I would start taking it on a night that you don't have to get up early the next morning. At first you might feel groggy in the morning.

A lot of people have had great success with melatonin.

Good luck!

My hubby also has bad insomina. His perscription is Zopiclone(I think I spelled that right) About $25(CAN) for a bottle of 30. He only takes 1/2 a pill when he needs one, and it puts him to sleep. On our benefits plan, he only ends up paying $5.

In any event, talk to you Doc. I'm sure they can suggest something.

Just don't use Lunesta. It'll give you the most disgusting taste in your mouth you can imagine. Ambien is probably better.

See source link below for Lunesta reviews. Notice how common the horrid taste is.

Don't you mean NON-prescription? For my sleep problems, the doc told me to take Benadryl, which is actually an over-the-counter decongestant, because it has the side-effect of causing drowsiness. But you really should ask your doctor, not us. Best of luck!

I'd like a sleeping aide too (preferably female) and there are plenty of cheap ones around, but my wife would object.
