Absolutely. There are many ways that animals comminucate with each other ( body posture, eye contact, growling, leaving scents, etc.). Dogs do make different sounds (tone, picth, inflection, intensity, duration) when they bark to show anger, alarm , happiness, etc. When my female dog barks, I can usually tell by the sound more or less what is going on. The sound that she makes when there is a person in my yard is very different than her bark for another approaching dog. When a wild animal (racoon, deer, etc) comes near, she is significantly more agitated. If you have ever heard the sound of dogs howling when a bear or mountain lion approaches, you will never forget it. That sound is unforgettable. Yes....they can understand each other on at least some level.

Of course they understand other dogs barking. Not really in the same way humans understand each other talking....but they bark to communicate with each other...to fight..to show off and they even bark to tell humans things.

Basically there is a friendly excited bark and a aggressive mean bark.

They understand the difference between these but anyone who thinks they are talking is a nut.

Yes! That is how they often communicate. Body language, sounds, smells, these are all ways they communicate.
