how do i encode my word document (.wps)?

i have a saved document from windows office (.wps) and when i go to open it ,t asks me how i wanna encode it.ive tried all the options it gave me and it still shows everything that i typed in some kind of giberish ,can anyone help?

WPS is NOT a Office Document. WPS is Microsoft Works word processor document. MS Word filetype is DOC.
