He was up to date with his injections, had his little ballies chopped off at the right time, feed with Science Plan biscuits and plenty of water, I loved him and looked after him like he was my baby. On Christmas Eve I found him dead in the garden. He had only been out for 3 hours. I took him to the vet and they checked him over - he hadnt been run over and he didnt have a mark on him. What happened? I miss him so much! Please no horrible answers as I am hurting so. I dont know whether to get another kitten? But he was so special I know I cant replace him but there is such a big void in my house now.

Sorry to hear about your loss. There could be many reasons why he died: poisoning - not necessarily intentionally as cats can pick up poisons through killing infected mice/rats, or eating the poison put down for them. It could be some kind of problem with his internal organs, which may not show until too late. There could be genetic problems - none of which would be known about until something happens.

Whatever the reason, only take on another pet when you feel ready. You seem to be a caring owner, and may need time to grieve first - this is necessary, I spent over year without another animal, before giving home to another, after my cats died. You will never replace him, but you can give an equally good life to another animal in time - which will have their own personality and can be loved for who they are. This can be done in the memory of the animal you lost. There is no right, or wrong time, you will know when the time is right for you to love another pet.
As for the house feeling empty, this will be the case for a while, but go with your instincts and another animal will, in time, be given a great home.

Awwwwww, I'm so sorry, that's so sad that I'm still shaking and it made me cry. Maybe get another cat. that looks nothing like the other one, opposite gender, completely different name, and breed, or one exactly the same, etc. Wait a little while though till the sadness has passed. He probably got into something in the garden, (fertilizer perhaps?) or maybe just stressed, ran out of breath? My kitten, I got at either 4 weeks or 4 months old, can't remember exactly, her whole family was infested with fleas. we took her to the vet, they told us to come back again, and we did. She also had very bad tapeworms. She liked exploring the veterinary office rather than staying on the scale, but that's all we ever went there for because by the time we were going to get her spayed, it was too pricey. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that even though we never took her to the vet, she lived 7 whole years, and i think and hope she is still living. we had to get rid of Heidi right before her 7th birthday. she was so cute and looked so young she was only up for adoption for a day. I loved her so much, but she attacked my face and wouldn't let go. we had to get rid of her. we didn't want to so we kept her for 2 or 3 more weeks, but she did it again and was gone the very next day. I hope your cat is having fun and kitty heaven with all the other angel kitties, and that my cat Heidi is enjoying her life while it lasts

Sorry to hear of your loss. The only thing that will give you a definite answer as to why he died is to have an autopsy done. If you do consider getting another cat please think about getting one from a rescue. These little ones have probably been ill treated or unwanted and unloved, and knowing how you feel, you will have a lot of love to lavish on a new cat. That along with knowing you are rescuing a cat or kitten from a horrible start in life will help you get over the loss of your one and give you something new to focus your love and attention on. You will never forget your cat but you will be giving a loving home to another. I wish you well.

I'm so sorry. I lost my favorite male cat ever this spring. I had to put him down as he was becoming skeletal with cancer and chronic renal failure, and the subcutaneous injections of the saline solution were not hleping enough. He was so depressed, we were so depressed, and I waited until I felt he let me know it was time for him to go. I was devastated. Still, after a few month we got a pair of kittens from a friend (brother and sister). It was the best decision to make and we love our kittens. I let my husband know that I couldn't imagine living in a house without animals. It's not a replacement issue. every pet is different.
I don't know what happened to your kitty, but perhaps he had some kind of congenital defect that showed up and killed him. It's good he did not suffer for a long time.
Someone once posted the Rainbow Bridge poem on this forum. I'm going to give it to you now and I hope it helps you heal a bit.

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends, so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together."

I am soooo sorry for your loss... and I can feel your pain and confusion... Perhaps your kitty had a congenital weakness like a heart flaw. I read a sad article about one cat who died just jumping from a table to his owner's lap - the owner was just as stunned. The cat was healthy one moment and dead the next. She had an autopsy done and it turned out that her cat had some kind of congenital heart flaw... perhaps that's what happened to your kitty. If it is, be comforted by the factthat he did not suffer at all.

It is right that you should grieve now. But perhaps when the time is right, consider getting another one to love and care for like you did with the lost one. Such love as you have for animals should not go to waste... there are many kitties that need such a heart as yours.

Sorry for your loss. Could he have eaten something outside? He also may have had a heart defect or something of the sort that went undetected.

There is no reason not to get another pet. It will help fill the void in your life created by the passing of a beloved pet. You know that a new pet can never take the place of one that is lost, but it will ease your pain.

If you do decide to get another, keep it inside. That will keep it safer, and it will be more ikely to live a long life.

so sorry to hear that, very sad. Sometimes thankfully not often it happens. My brother's dalmation was out playing (she was 3months old) he threw a ball for her and on the way to retrieve it she dropped dead. The vet couldnt find anything wrong. So we can only assume there was a heart defect, either congenital or through a virus, or had a massive stroke. It's usually the heart though in sudden death. It's devastating when it happens. You will never replace him but in time you will have another with his own uniqueness who will be just as loved, I know. xx

First of all...I'm sorry! I do have a cat and will die the day he dies....I can't imagine how you must be feeling. I'm sorry!

You will never be able to replace him but maybe can fill the void with another kitten....I think I would do it...

Sorry if I'm not helping much I have no idea I have never been through this....Hope you feel better soon...

Sorry about your loss... It may have been something in the bones, blood, something internally.... I put my cat down 3 months ago from Stones and he had a complete blockage and the best thing I ever did was went and got a new one from the local SPCA. Don't get me wrong I loved my cat and he is greatly missed but I also love my new cat. I also recommend getting a cat that is about a year they are over their curtain climbing years but sill are playful... also the best thing to do is let the cat choose you don't choose a cat. I really hope this helped you... and so sorry for your loss.

Maybe he died from the cold?? Or was it not cold on the Xmas eve where you are? I'm in TX and it was cold here.

Could have eaten a plant in the yard.

Didn't the vet find out what happened when you brought it in?? Why did you bring it in if not for a autopsy?
