I think that's difficult to answer. Unlike churchgoers/ church members, there just aren't any 'attendance figures' for atheists!

You also find a lot of people say 'oh yes, I'm Church of England / Episcopalian etc' because that's how they were brought up. I know several atheists who insisted on marrying in church - how odd!

There may also be confusion between 'non-believers' and actual 'There-is-no-God' atheists.

So as to percentages, the best I can do is quote the link below which says "A 1995 survey attributed to the Encyclopædia Britannica indicates that the non-religious make up about 14.7% of the world's population, and atheists around 3.8%."

I'm part of the 3.8% because I have found nothing that has persuaded me that there is any evidence to support the idea that such a thing as 'god' either does, or needs to, exist!

Thank you for asking.

I am an athiest. I actually do not understand why people belive in religion in this day and age. I see religion as fairytales. Let me explain...
The bible teaches us that God made the earth - science proves it was an explosion.
The bible teaches is God made Adam and Eve as the first man and woman - science teached us we evolved from single cell organisms.
So called 'ghost sightings' can all be explained away and no one has ever proved they have seen a ghost.
People who have died and been brought back to life report seeing a light - this is proven to be what happens when oxygen is cut off to the brain. No one who has gone through this ever sees God - just nothingness.
I believe when we die that is it - nothing more. It really scares the hell out of me that this is all there is and when you die that is it - but what proof do we have of anything else?

I'm an Athiest becasue I do not believe in God at all! Religion is the reason for the wars!! And because the bible is load of crap that is contradictory and has its rules made up on the way! Its the only story i can think of that has had its script changed so many times that it is no longer the original!!

I'm an AGNOSTIC because I strongly believe that the only way we can all live together on this crowded planet is by not pronouncing as knowledge and truth things that cannot be proven and that are, therefore, only beliefs ("God exists" or "God does not exist" - mere beliefs). Everyone is entitled to their own system of beliefs, yet, at the same time, they can't impose that system on others because they can't be certain of its truth. This resolves the ever-current problem of people using their own beliefs to bash other people who do not share those beliefs.
Does this actually go against human nature, inherently judgemental and intolerant? Possibly.

I don't know what I am. i don't believe in a religion or God. I even don't care. But I will not say that God doesn't exists. How would I know. It is not in my hand to decide. Believing in a book written 2000 years ago? I'm not intellectual slow to believe in that ****. But I will never say that God doesn't exists. I don't know and I don't care. I live my life, I have values, beliefs in a human ship and kindness.

I was raised as a christian but I am not anymore

I consider it a compliment to be called an agnostic. I do not pretend to know what the ignorant claim to be sure of. If God does not reward men for being honest, generous, and brave, but for the act of faith, then without faith, all the so-called virtues are sins. Thus the men who practice these virtues, without faith, deserve to suffer eternal pain? All who doubted or denied would be lost? And living a moral life, for the ones that you love is simply a respectable way of going to hell for living it without faith? No. I cannot believe in a heaven or a hell, simply because if the God that there is is loving, he would not condemn his children to an eternity of torture because they were either brought up believing something taught to them in their childhood, or they never came to a conclusion in their spiritual search.
We inherit what we believe for the most part. Religion is mind control. We are taught what our parents believe and therefore never dare to question it as a child. If I had been born in Constantinople, then I would believe there is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. If my parents had lived on the banks of the Ganges, I would have been a worshiper of Siva, longing for the heaven of Nirvana. So, who is to say who is right? I believe there is no possibility to ever know the truth. No human written book can tell me what is real, and I refuse to base my facts on another person’s opinions or interpretations. I believe that you should always be searching for truth, but that you will never find it. You cant, and when you think you’ve gotten close, you’ll never be 100% sure because it’s not possible. And to claim sureness is ignorance. Therfore atheism is just as dogmatic as religion, both are claiming truth.

Not enough of them as far as I am concerned.
Personally I'm an agnostic: why? because it makes sense! Because I like to question and use my brain!
