Possibly. But you have no liability beyond replacing what was lost.

If someone loaned you something and you lost it, I don't think legally you would have an issue, but you should replace it. That's human decency! If you know who found it/took it, then you should talk to them to get it back, now they would be in trouble for stealing it.

If you had responsibility for the something - then you won't face legal trouble, but financial as you should replace or reimburse for the something....
Say you borrowed a cd player. (or your friend asked you to keep it for a bit for whatever reason) and it got broken/lost/stolen while you had it. You won't face criminal charges - but she can take you to civil court.
To keep the someone off of your back, replace it or reimburse for it.

There may be legal issues if the owner decides to sue you.
You should just replace the item. It's your responsibility to do so.

It depends on what it is...but if you were given the item yes you are responsible for its safe keeping. If it is stolen or lost while you had it you may be in trouble

Was this item laoned to you? Then you are responsible for replacing item or paying them in cash its value. If you did not steal this item then should not worry about criminal charges.
