Based on dependability ratings, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are good brands.
Given that you are 19 and male, your insurance is likely going to be very high. So, you should look strictly at passenger cars. FYI, if you are a student with good grades, in certain states, there are discounts for your auto insurance.
Also given that you are looking to possibly spend only 2 grand, my personal recommendation is an older model Toyota Corolla. They have good gas mileage, require relatively low maintenance, and runs for 30 years. I personally know 3 people with Corollas for over 30 years with no major problems.
Depending on your driving habit, safety may also be a concern. You can go online to see the safety ratings of vehicles by year, make and model.
http://autos.msn.com/home/safety_ratings.aspx
http://safercar.gov (more comprehensive, but slower site)
According to the safety "star" raking, the latest models of Toyota Corollas are closely ranked in safety as expensive makes like Saab and Volvo, brands historically known as the safest cars on the road.

What someone's choice in a vehicle is may not be yours, you really have to do some homework and find out what suits your lifstyle best, there is lot's of good product on the market today and to get valid value buying a used car there are steps you must follow.
Go to my website http://www.usedcartips.org/ and study the 10 steps.
You being only 19 insurance will become a factor when you find a car you like. example a Mustang will most likely be 5 times the cost in insurance than a Focus.

That's a lot of money to throw at a car, though to be honest, I'd save at least 75% for your first insurance policy....
anyway, here's a few ideas for about £2k:
Anyway, this may seem a bit wordy, but bear with me; good choices are...:
Toyota Yaris: Dependable, lots of room, cheap insurance, peppy engines, and holds it's value well, though most tidy models may still be over £2k. Watch out for ex-driving school cars.
Fiat Seicento: A heavy depreciator, but nowadays, this simply means this thing is quite a bargain. Try and go for a 1.1 sporting, with group 3 oinsuracena nd sporty styling. Fun to drive, but look out for crashed examples and dodgy electrics... oh, and they're not great cars for having a crash or carrying a load of passengers...
Ford Ka: A Fiesta is a decent choice, though the older cars are somewhat cramped in the rear so I think the Ka, which is mechanically identical, is the better choice, with cheaper insurance and more street cred, although some might find it slightly girly. Beware of over-optimistic pricing by some selers..
Nissan Micra: A bit like an older version of the Yaris really. Bubbly styling, lot of headroom, and quite bulletproof, though maybe a bit vague when it comes to driving feel. A bit fo a granny-favourite, so watch otu for neglect, and tired cars from driving schools.
Vauxhall Corsa: Fine if you just want a decent-looking hatchback to drive to the shops, with strong, willing engines and decent room, but they're not much fun to drive. Cheap parts and insurace makes them a favourite for Max Power readers, so watch out for modified and abused cars.
Look at these if you want to spend a bit more than £2k:
Toyota Yaris: As above. Go for 1.3 or diesel.
Fiat Panda: Better build than Fiats of old, proven mechanicals, fairly roomy. both petrols fine.
Ford Ka: See earlier comments, but bear in mind a new model is imminent. Buy most basic for best value.
Daihatsu Charade: Not many around on used market. Very underrated. Econmical, chirpy little thing.

Spend the 2 grand on a fiesta or a corsa and save the rest as a deposit on a house. You lose money the minute you drive a car out the show room. Property goes up and up and the sooner you get on that ladder the more you will make

base it all on your current and future needs, not how much money you can spend right now. drive a lot of cars, buy something reasonable and put about half of that money into a bank and just let it ride
3-4 year old Honda/Toyota/Nissan
