Let him know that you will not accept his rude behavior and if it continues there will be severe consequences. DO NOT GIVE IN TO HIM. You are to be the authority in his life right now. It may be hard for you to "lay down the law", but if you don't do it now you will be in for a long journey ahead. Take away something he likes to play with or do if he refuses to obey your rules. He is old enough to understand what he is doing is wrong and as you said he wasn't raised that way. Kids pick up a lot of things from other kids so be prepared for everything and anything to undermine you as a parent.

Make your child write sentences. My 12 year old tries that and when he starts he gets to write. If he gets an attitude he writes. I make my kids write any where from 100 to 500 sentences. Works great for the most part, because they hate to sit a write for so long.

Your child is testing you so don't give consequences you're not willing to stick with. Your child needs to understand that you are the parent and you provide whatever s/he needs. Teach your child exactly what that consists of, hot water to bathe, electricity to watch t.v., clothes, etc.; I used this on my child and told him that some kids don't even have a room, and how easy it is for me to put him in a situation like that, he quickly learned not to disrespect me. Plus, I always put my foot down, He's nine, you seriously need to learn how.

If he is "speaking" down to you, as teenagers and preteens sometimes do, ask him if maybe you had treated him in that way, because you don't understand why he feels it necessary to point fingers in ridiculement, instead of lending a helping hand, and speaking honestly, openly, and without animosity. Blame game is only fun for one.

Just let this child know that you are an adult and that he is a child and let him know that he will not speak to you or any other adult in that manner. Tell him specifically what was said that was offensive and let him know the proper way to say it. If it happens again you should punish him for 10 minutes from something he enjoys.

maybe parents don't handle theyre kids like this, but when i was younger and i said something inappropriate or disrespectful, my mother would smack me in the mouth wherever we were. it didnt hurt, but it made me feel ashamed and reminded me that she was the one in charge.
