Does he have any difficulties chewing/swallowing? Did he pass a swallow study? Does he have a G-tube? What type of CP does he have? Any food allergies?
If he does not pass the swallow study, the child can suffocate by any oral intake. You need to feed him by tube.
If he swallows and chews, then you can feed him with any solid food too. (you might need to find out what textures does the child feed comfortable, and the size of the bite can matter also)
Kids with cerebral palsy should always be on a diet, because in a sever, lower functioning child eats lots of carbs and sugar, and gets lots of Energy intake, more than he could burn with a lower physical activity, than it is going to result to obesity, then CHD, and a shorter and unhealthy life.
If a child has athetoid type of CP, then your child is very possible to burn a lot of Energy with the fluctuating muscle tone, and the constant movements. So you might need to feed your child 6 or more times, to maintain a good and healthy energy level.
Kids with CP are more likely to have some type of food allergy too.And they react strongly on textures.
