I sit in an office (OK, cubicle) all day and am curious if there are any excercises I can do while sitting most of the day. I do get up at least once an hour to stretch or walk on breaks, but I need ideas for when I am sitting down.

OMG YES There's lots of things you can do at your desk.

While sitting, contract your abs...equivallent of a situp/crunch.

Do you have a paperweight? Do some curls and some tricep curls...military presses, etc.

Squeeze your buttocks together and hold for 5 seconds...equivallent to lunges

Do a search on the web for office exercises. GOOD LUCK!

You can do shoulder exercises.
Extend your arms as far as they extend and stretch them far, then begin rotating them or moving them up and and down (just a few inches) do this for 2-3 minutes or as long as it takes for your arms to feel it. then challenge yourself and do it even a bit longer.

2. move away from the keyboard. Bend your elbows and raise your hands up as high as your head. Roll your wrists around in a circle 10 times clockwise, then reverse and do it 10 times the other way. Then open and close your hands 10 times. Finally, drop your arms to the side and shake out your arms for 10 seconds. This will help improve the circulation in your arms and wrists and wake you up a little. Don’t forget to breathe.

for the next one you have to stand but i have done it at work:
Stand on one leg next to a desk or wall (so you can hold on if you need to). Bend your knee slightly, only 15 or 20 degrees, and then straighten your leg. Repeat this 10 times or until your thigh muscles begin to “burn”. Repeat with the other leg. Do this once a day. Over time, you will find that doing this exercise consistently will strengthen the muscles of your legs and thighs and improve your walking and standing.

for more do a search on Google usually they have some that you can do at work.

Tough question really.

I suppose the real answer would depend on your current fitness level.

If you are not at all fit, then just waving your arms around for a couple of minutes out of every hour may actually have some impact, but if you are fit and are looking for a real workout at your desk, your options are limited.

Sharper Image used to sell a little mini bike that you could actually use while watching tv, sitting on your couch or at your desk.

It was just two peddles that were attached to a small housing, very simple. A few years ago, this item retailed for about $100.00.

If you would get use out of it, you may want to look into it, as I believe they are still carrying it.

First check your sitting position

Sit with the buttocks pushed right back into the chair, chest lifted, feet hip-width apart and parallel, resting flat on the floor, heels directly below knees, hands resting on lap, eyes gazing directly ahead. You may need to move your chair back a little from your desk.

Count out two sets of 8 for each exercise

ie. 'and 1 and 2 and 3' etc. to 8 and repeat.

1: Alternate shoulder lifts

'and 1': lift right shoulder to right ear
and 2: drop right shoulder vigorously and lift left shoulder to left ear
and 3: drop left, lift right
and 4: drop right, lift left
and so on for two sets of 8 counts

2: Both together shoulder lifts

'and 1, 2, 3, 4': lift both shoulders to ears and hold
and 5, 6, 7, 8: drop shoulders vigorously and hold
repeat

3: Alternate shoulder swings

'and 1': swing right shoulder forward
and 2: swing right shoulder back, left forward
and 3: left back, right forward
and so on for two sets of 8 counts

I try to do calve presses by "standing" on my tiptoes while sitting. Just press the ball of your foot down and press while your sitting and flex your calve. This can help build that muscle. You can also tense your abs and hold it to help strengthen those muscles.
