WARNING: Any time you take animals overseas you're looking at a distinct possibility of having them quarantined for up to six months. That's cruel and unusual punishment for pets as far as I'm concerned. But the rules vary from country to country. Best people to talk to are the people in the Outbound section of your servicing Traffic Management Office (TMO) or Joint Personal Property Shipping Office (JPPSO). They can give you a complete rundown on all the rules for transporting animals to Japan, Europe, wherever.

I have lived there twice. Both times coming from the states. We left there last year.

I don't think you can take the guinea pigs. I do know you can take the cats and dog. It also depends on the branch of military you are in and their regs. In the AF you are allowed two pets but with a waiver you can bring a third. Don't listen to the people that say otherwise. I found this out the hard way. I had to give up a pet then found out after we were there that we could have brought him. To get them there you have to pay for it. Keep any and all receipts including vet and air fare as you can claim it on your taxes. You will need their shots up to date and will have to have a health certificate no sooner than 10 days prior to flying. This has to show on the outside of their kennel. They each will need their own kennel. For the military they have to be able to stand up and turn around with out touching the sides of the kennel but state side airlines aren't as picky. Depending on the time of year you are traveling you may have to make other arrangements. Japan has a pet embargo so during summer months so they can't fly below as cargo. During summer months in the US some airlines won't allow this either. United Airlines flies into Japan if you need them. Quarantine, in Japan, was 14 days in house when we got there in 4 years ago. Oh one last thing the pets have to be microchiped.

I know this was a lot of info but I hope it helps. Japan is truly a wonderful country. You will have more of a culture shock coming back then going there. We have experienced different areas of Japan and loved every minute of it. The Japanese people are so wonderful and polite. Make sure you take full advantage of this experience. You won't regret it. I hope your move goes smoothly.

Hard to answer without a bit of research, but here are some ideas where to look for that.

Each military command generally has a public website now and most of those have sections containing information for military members and families being ordered to the command. Search for the Command Name on the web and visit their site.

Also each service has a group whose job it is to arrange for shipping house hold goods from current duty station to the next. They usually have a name like "Personal Property Office". These are the folks that would be paying your relocation travel claim too. There are lots of rules about what the military will pay for related to a PCS. There should be one of those offices at your current local base and they too most likely have a website.
