The verbage used in American English in regards to Catholics and prayer is highly misleading. Even Catholics will say that we pray TO Mary, the Saints, the dead, etc. The truth is, that we only pray to God; we ask those who have gone before us to pray with us to God.
Why do we do this? In my opinion, it steams from the same psychological reason so many people "talk" to their deceased loved ones. No one blinks when a person visits their parent's grave and says "Dad, what would you have done?" I think it's a human need to personalize a conversation.
Mary and the other saints were all human beings who lived life, good times and bad, joys and pains, etc. etc. While it might be hard for some people to concieve that God understands what it is like to be, say, sick, it is much easier to look to the lives of a real person who has "been there, done that."
So Mary... Mary has a special place in the Catholic Church as the Mother of Jesus who freely said "yes" to God's invitation. But more than that, she is so loved because she is the very model of living a life of faith and obedience to God. It's also easy to see her as a mother figure, which is comforting for some people.
Make no mistake, though - Mary is NOT divine, she is not anywhere near the same "level" as God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, she does not answer prayers. She is considered by some to be our greatest intercessor with God, but she is not a necessary part of praying to God. (Check out the rubrics for Catholic mass - she is rarely highlighted.)

Marry worship?? Oh, you mean MARY worship!! No such thing. Protestants ignore Mary altogether, even though the Bible says all generations are to call her blessed. Catholics honor Mary for her unique role in God's plan of salvation, but are absolutely forbidden to worship her, or anyone else other than God. That would be idolatry, and a quick glance at the Catechism of the Catholic Church will show you that the Catholic Church absolutely condemns idolatry in every form. So, you can relax. "Mary worship" is just a silly myth, and like other silly myths is talked about only by those most ignorant of the facts.

In a true Christian faith there is no Mary worship. There is only God and Jesus worship. Please stop listening to what ignorant people tell you about Catholics and learn things for yourself. A little research goes a looooooooooong way.
*edit*
We Catholics ask Mary and the saints to pray FOR us and WITH us. The same way you would ask your parents, friends, grandparents, ect... to pray for you and with you. We believe that our brothers and sisters who have gone to paradise before us can still be there for us in a time of need. Plus the saints are super great role-models. =)

I think you mean Mary -
It is simple Christianity used Mary as part of an older paganistic archetype. that of the Wise father, the Young mother and the child, She also conviently doubled as Both the Young Virgin, and the Fertile Matron.
However Both of these forms are reall the forms of women with little power - one is innocent and needs protection from men, the other is strong, but protective of herself, and her budding family however hse is very delicate with the life inside thus they are not active in pursueing their own power but rely on men for food/ shelter protection.
Worshipping marry is basically worshiping the old archtyep of the virgin, the matron, and the crone - in christianity however the crone ( the women has come fully into her power) has been demonized to be the witch. a source of evil and harm.... thus
all mary worship is basically worshiping the subjucation of women to men...
that clear it up for ya?.

They will tell you they do not worship hr. However they use her as an intercessory for prayers, have statues to her and the saints which is idolatry. They say she was assumed into heaven and is with the saints because she was a holy vessel. She was that but she was also mother to more than just Jesus and can no longer be considered the holy virgin.

Well, after a couple of divorces, most people don't really CARE for marriage any longer...much less worship it.

Some people consider the institution of marriage to be a sacred trust, and value that bond greatly. I'm not sure why you consider it a mystery.
