I have been asking this same question for some time now. the answers I have gotten can be grouped as follows:
1) these people do not believe there is any human culpability therefore they do not believe anything can be done. IE. 'nature will take it's course and we are powerless.
2) these folks believe there is a problem but it is not imminent. They will deal with it when they think the problem becomes critical.
3) in this group are the people who refuse to look at the data available. They will drive their SUV's and consume as they wish because they intentionally convince themselves this is a liberal hoax.
4) In this last group are those that believe their personal economies are more important. They either believe someone else will make the sacrifices and deal with the problems or maybe eventually, where they are where they want to be financially they will get involved.
The sad thing about it is that all of these folks will eventually believe there is a problem. Unfortunately their unwillingness to face facts and act now will insure that their children have no choice but to face them in the future. The problem with this is that those children may not be facing a problem, they may well be facing a disiaster.

Just a guess but I'd say that its because the environmentalists, like all the other special interest groups have lied to us so many times and continue to lie to us so often that we do not believe them any longer.
I'm older and remember one panic after the other. Back in my teens and twenties I went up in flames over certain issues. In my thirties and forties I was more cautious and studied the issues better before deciding what to support. Now, I assume I am being lied to because, from experience and my strong scientific education, I know that most often I am being lied to. Global warming is just another big lie. Tell it long enough and to enough people and it becomes accepted as a truth...even when it is almost all lies.

b/c skeptics always point out that there are too many variables to pinpoint any one cause. i, however, fail to see how this can be a final point. sure, okay there is no one cause. let's still address SOME of the causes, at least the ones we're able to. the changes we are seeing are far too fast to be natural and in the grand scheme of things. i for one would like to see the survival and preservation of our planet b/c it is sooooo beautiful and its balance delicate. why do people argue that it is okay to destroy and obliterate things, many of which are never to return or be repeated? i am confident that this year will be hell. hot, fires, no rain. people will wake up, if they don't we'll all suffer and eventually die...why is man so much like a cancer to this world??
i agree whole-heartedly with toffeefan's comment

tofeefan, i agree with you in general, but i disagree on something:
climate change is not a problem that will suffer our children, we are suffering it today
some people leave their houses because of lack of water, because of lack of ice (artic), because cyclons (asia), etc.
unfortunately we, as serious people, cann t state that those facts are related to increase of global temperature on earth
heath workers cann t state that increase of respiratory track deceases are correlated to pollution, they cann t state that increase of lung cancer (out of smoking cancer) is correlated to GHG in the atmosphere,
But it is suspicious, right?
Yes, some people said 50 years ago that tobacco was not bad, now tobacco companies are paying.
Burn oil, it is very healthy !
