We are going in July and fly into Beijing. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations?

If your on a budget, or just price conscious, you can book a hostel at the following site: http://www.hostelbeijing.com The hotels are clean and comfortable. I can personally recommend the Leo, Jade, or City Central international youth hostels. The locations are great, and the rooms at a 2-3 star level (the Leo a bit lower, but more fun, and better location)

If you plan to continue your travels through China, you can check out this online guide: http://www.travelchinaguide.com This site also has a very accurate train schedule, complete with price list.

If you have anymore questions, or have some specific plans in mind, feel free to email me, and I will see what I can do to help. :)

July is almost the hottest period in China. Expect at least 35 degrees - so clothing to stay cool. You know China is HUGE so plan carefully the kind of trip you want. Of course Beijing but try to go to see the Great Wall at Mutianu (not Badeling!); visit the Summer Palace AND Yuan Ming Yuan. There are several smaller parks that I like more than the 'touristy ones; Zhongshan (next to Forbidden ity (west side), Ditan and Longtan are examples. Shop in Xidan - go to Wangfujing only for window shopping. ArrangeIf you haven't booked a hotel contact me; there are various differences in price. At least make ti tours locally. Allow time for ONE train journey; for example Suzhou (China's venice) - you can easily continue from there to Shanghai for bright lights and millions of people!

Try to stay in the Wangfujing area (Peninsula is very nice) if you can. Easy walk to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and shopping. At night all the food carts come out and you can graze and eat for cheap. Some of it is odd (scorpions on a stick, etc), but none of it will hurt you. This area is a bit more expensive to stay in but very convenient. Cabs are cheap though so its not a big deal to stay somewhere else like the Marriott Courtyard.
Arrange a day tour through the hotel to the Great Wall.

Well, let's see.

1. Be sure to bring your first-aid kit.

2. Don't eat their meat there because it's really hard to eat. (Trust me, I tried eating it). Eat seafood!!!

3. Don't drink their pure milk. (nasty stuff) Drink bottled water or boiled water, tea, or packaged juices. (Their sodas aren't fizzy enough and they're also too sweet)

4. Go shopping in the malls. (You'd get great deals for certain things) Stop by the gift shops (cute cute stuff!!! Sometimes, you can find photo booths where you can take photos!!! They're really CHEAP and you can pick your own borders!!!)

5. Be EXTRA careful when carrying a purse. There seems to be a high number of thieves in China.

6. Beware of the bathrooms. (They're not toilets but HOLES!!!)

7. If you do go by the Great Wall of China, don't walk it. They have some device that transports you to the other side.

8. One US dollar = 7 yuan. (This changes daily though)

9. Be sure to take lots of photos wherever you go!!!

10. Since you're stopping by Beijing, you'd be arriving at the Beijing Airport. They have these little stands where they sell products made of silk, a supermarket, ATM machines, etc.

Anything else, I can tell you through email. Hope that helps =]

It is hot and very humid in July! I have a young, honest female friend in Beijing, who could help to maximise your stay in China, regarding anything, such as accommodation, visits to tourist sites, getting around, and restaurants. Email me if you are interested.
