No, because now we have a congress who are aligned with the terrorists who want nothing more than for the U.S. to tuck tail and run.

No. here's why not. I have often heard Iraq compared to Germany & Japan. It was long we had to stay etc. Here are some key differences which should answer the main question. First Germany & Japan where, for the most part, homogeneous nations. Most people in post war Germany were Germans and likewise of the Japanese and Japan. That gives you an instant national identity, something to cling to and work to rebuild. Iraq is nothing more than a creation by the British of different groups that once formed the Ottoman Empire. You hear a lot in the Middle East about the desires of Shai, Sunni and Kurds. It is from Americans that you hear a lot about what "Iraqis" want.

Second, Germany and Japan were already apart of the industrial world. The abilities and skills of thier people made it possible for those nations (and others in Europe) to rebuild. Iraq has the unfortunate burden of a great deal of the world’s oil and scarcely anything else. In order for a nation or society to succeed; the resource that must be most thoroughly enhanced is its people.

Look at China, communist sure, but an industrial, manufacturing, technological world force; based on the skills of its people (oppressed though they may be).

Finally the unlike with Europe there is no Marshall Plan for Iraq. We can't win or succeed or declare victory because no one is willing to say okay. We broke it, let's fix it. I mean really Europe Post WWII style fix it; building, investing, debt forgiving employing young Sunni, Shia and Kurdish men (cause the more time they have on there hands unemployed the more time they have to make mischief).

I do think we need a surge in Iraq, but a surge of money, industry, business advisors etc, not troops. So there is my rather long answer I hope it helped.

Oh a little off topic but this bugs me. The terms Arabs, Muslims, and Middle East region are nonsensical. Israelis are generally not Arab or Muslim though they are in the Middle East. Iraqis are mostly Arab, but Iranians are generally Persian. It is this kind of generalized western ignorance that keeps us in such good favor with the rest of the world.

A post from yahoo elmjunburke;
Most non-military people don't see the "war" in the same light as the generals.
Military people are trained to fight real wars. A war is a conflict between two or more nations. All soldiers wear the uniform of their anmy. There is a way of ending the war. When all of the enemy territory is taken, the war is over.
This fracus is not in any way a war. We've been using the "war" designation too long. The war on drugs, the war on poverty, the war on crime, and now the war on terrorism.
None of these wars can be won. Crime can be reduced, the same with terrorism, drugs, etc., but they will never be completely wiped out.
This is not the work of the army, it is police work. All of the above are crimes, are not military actions. Crimes are controlled by the police. Military actions by the army.

Short answer, yes.

We have a long way to go. We handed the government over to Iraq way to soon. My terp (interpreter) said it best. She's originally from Mosul and said that the Americans are too nice and naive. We handed things over to people who didn't know how to rule. It was like giving a monkey a Mercedes and say, "Here, this is yours, drive it."

Handing it over satified people in the short term but has made things more difficult in the process. We will win, I have no doubt about that. It's just going to take a while.

I think we can pull out of Iraq by 2015.

This is a no win situation we are just targets stuck in the middle of a civil war. Anybody says different simply doesn't have a clue! the only thing to do there is to leave the war will sort itself out. Probably ending with three new countries one supported by Iran one supported by Saudi Arabia and another supported by US or Syria.

In order to know if a 'win' is possible you must first know what the objectives are.

After all of these years I do not know what the American objective in Iraq is.

I don't think that this has been carefully articulated to the American public.
