If your friend has told you with enough time to plan, and it's do able for you I would go for it. Your not only going to spend money on her wedding, but your also going on vacation. It's like killing two birds with one stone.

If you have the money available, go for it. Your friend will be delighted that you came, you wont have to buy a gift, because your presence at the wedding is enough, and you can have a fantastic vacation in the mean time! If it is going to be a struggle for you to spend the money to get there, explain to your friend how much you regret not being able to make it, and that you would like to take the new couple out to dinner when they come back to the states.

You don't have to spend all that money if you've not had the friend since forever. Buy a very lovely present that's a bit expensive and durable for your friend and he/she will always see the present and remember you for that. How are you sure your friend will remember you were at the wedding in 4 years time anyway? A lovely present with a broad smile will do.

Save your money for something else or send it to me.

Depends on how good a friend it is. However, you could look at this as an opportunity to see Australia, pet koala's or whatever, and your friend's wedding is a bonus.

I would love to go to Australia, I just have never had an excuse.

It depends on what kind of a friend he/she is. If its a really good friend that you've had forever, then yes you should. If its not then just send a gift with a "sorry i couldnt make it" card.
