Its not that kids dont WANT to do it....well yea it is. As I see it, brushing there teeth is important, but boring. Nothing about brushing teeth, cleaning there rooms, doing chores is exciting!! Make it fun for your kids!! This may help them to look forward to brushing those (hopefully) pearly whites. Kids just want to have fun...

Sometimes people forget that children especially young ones taste and smell everything much better than adults, toothpaste doesn't taste good when you're 25 and when you're 5 it's even worse. Couple that with having to stand still in the bathroom and do what you're told for 2 minutes and you've got a disaster. Not to mention after the brushing is done the day is over and it's off to bed which is even more mental agony to a 5 year old...

That's a mystery to me, too. When I was a kid the toothpaste tasted pretty strong, so we didn't relish the experience. Maybe it feels like an invasion of their space. Kids don't have a whole lot of control over their own lives normally, so maybe it's just a way of asserting independence.(?) Try brushing without paste. I spoke to our dentist about it and he said the most important aspect of brushing is the actual brushing so the plaque will be removed. It won't smell as good, but it may be worth a shot.

They don't understand the importance of it. Maybe you could show him some pictures of bad teeth and dental procedures people have to go through to have damage fixed. Go search the Internet.

they probably dont hate brushing their teeth in particular... kids in general just hate doing whatever grow-ups force them to do... and some kids enjoy being chased down by parents-- they enjoy the attention.
