strong beer cannot be consumed in any way shape or form that constitutes relaxation, try drinking one and you'll see what i mean. some good examples include
Denmark's Carlsberg Elephant 7.2%
Belgium's Delirium Tremens 8.7%
Australia's Grand Ridge Scotch Ale 9%

Delirium Tremens comes in white opaque bottles, so skunking is never a problem

It reminds me of when my dad used to put a shot of whisky in his beer (boilermaker). Ugggh!
Give a pint of plain any day!

i.b.u.'s come strictly from the acidity of the hops. hops can be used to bitter, flavor or add extra aroma to a beer. if the beer tastes terrible and is an import, than the beer more than likely was skunked. india pale ales are hoppier because the hops act as a preservative. this was to prevent the beer from spoiling on the long journeys from england to india. there are some really good higher alcohol beers that extraordinarily good. mad elf from troegs here in pa is 11% and really good. imports may typically skunk if exposed to too much light or suffer from temperature changes(cold to warm or vice versa). typically i like to consume my beers(mostly ales) at about 55 degrees to get the best flavor out of the beer. i generally try to avoid imports because of the spoiling factor.

That's probably because you've been weaned on piss-poor light American lagers which have virtually no flavor. When a beer with a lot of flavor comes along, you freak out.
BTW, Delirium Tremens is one of the best tasting beers in the world.

Legacy Brewing Company in Reading, Pa has the BEST strong ale. It's called Euphoria. It's an 11% ABV Belgian-style strong ale, but it is so light & citrusy. I'm not a fan of beer, but I LOVE this beer.
I highly recommend it.

It is not the beer that taste so bad but it is the hopps and yeast they use to acheive this. It is an aquired taste. Some beers need to be chilled, others room temperature and others slightly warm.

I guess it's a question of personal preference and beer quality.
One of my favorite beers clocks in at 9%. La Fin Du Monde, from Unibroue in Chambly, Quebec.

when the alcohol level of a beer goes up usually the ibu (international bitterness units) level goes up to because of the extra hopps and barley
