Why when I was in the infantry they never went by standerd operating procedure? Isn't that why the book was written? I remember how strict they were with hair cuts high and tight only, when the regulation says the hair should not exceed neck level, be tapered, and not be faddish or unkempt!!

I was just bitching about why we could never grow our hair out at all I did 3 years. It seamed with rank and seniority you could have somewhat more hair. The rest of the Army besides the combat arms could have any hairstyle just about except for long or unkempt hair. I just think it's a double standard for infantry compared to non-combat arms.

The best asnwer I can give as a former Company Operations Sergeant is this. An SOP unlike a AR (army regulation) is specific to the element (platoon, company, squadron etc.) that it was written for/by. It will change based on who is in command or in charge. My SOP for in and outprocessing soldiers was diffeent from that of the Ops Sergeant that preceeded me.

SOP is for the running of a section, office, or other parts of a unit and are written by soldiers in said section...they usually go along with a AR or FM but they mostly explain how a job gets done...if your NCO was making you get a high and tight, he can do that...remember a NCO is add to, but not take away from a regulation...but if he tried to put you in for a AR 15 for it...it would not stand because you were with-in AR 670-1...we all run into NCOs like that...you just have to learn not to be that way...

Depends on what level a certain objective requires, I've written a few SOPs for my Marines before. I'm no CO.

Depends on your unit. You all must be uniform. If you are a combat arms type, you will have short hair, for sanitation, safety, and you never know when your next haircut may be. Admin guys, may have that rule relaxed a bit. but for the most part, its all about being in uniform.

The "book" rules change all the time with the times, just like ROE's. Go with the flow! Discipline is a major part of it, that's why the haircut!

Unit commanders have the authority to add to existing regulations, provided it does not conflict with the regulation. They can not take away from them. Meaning they can further restrict grooming standards, but the can not exempt from them. As long as that commander applies the restrictions to all his/her soldiers then he is well within his authority.
