Capnemo is an idiot, in every sense of the word.
First, his reference to NASA's picture is proof of global warming (notice the 200-year trend upwards?). The fact is, a single degree change in the average earth temperature is the difference between the ice age and now.
Second, his reference to a "secular scientific article that shows the earth was actually warmer" is not only irrelevant, but he obviously didn't read the article. The article was written in 1999, whereas the past 6 years have been the warmest on record. Further, the article states:
"Human-induced global warming is the raising of surface temperatures due to increased atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases."
and
"It is reasonable to conclude that global warming is a real threat,..."
??? How does this article go against global warming?
Third, his reference to the Harvard study is completely ignorant of the followup. 5 editors resigned in protest from the journal it was published in, including the managing editor. Harvard professors disagree with the findings, and the author of the study, Willie Soon, is a paid consultant for the George C. Marshall Institute, a Washington non-profit organization that opposes limits on carbon dioxide emissions.
See reference here: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=348723
Stop spreading lies, capnemo. The Earth is warming, mankind is responsible, and we need to do something about it.

The cause of the ice caps are melting for the very same reason as they have been for five thousand years yes, but the problem is getting much worse, not just a little worse its like the effect of a ligher on a ice cube, compared to throwing that ice cube in a preheated oven! Walk or ride a bike to the nearest video rental place, and rent AN INCONVENT TRUTH. Al Gore made this and it is very informitive. If you don't want to, some of the main points talk about the lvl of Co2 and how it relates to the temp of earth. Research has been made about the temp, and co2 level. The research goes back millions of years, using ice from the polar caps. Anyways the found co2 and heat go hand and hand. With cars and pollution we are now at the point higher than other area in history(millions of years). Some 300% higher than ever! Also how the ice caps create the weather conditions as we know them, if they melt Europe will go into another ice age. Once the ice caps start to melt the effect is incresinly worse. When frozen they reflect sunlight away from the water around them, therefore the less ice the less reflection. The water around them increases in temp and they melt faster and faster and faster. The southern pole, will be far worse though. It has ice that is land based also. If half of that ice falls into the ocean it would raise ocean levels by 20 feet or worse. Buh bye florida, china, New York, and so many more... We are causing this on a global scale, America is one of the leading contributers. The weather will get worse as I mentioned, storms will get stronger the ocean is getting warmer. New and unusuall storms will happen, the first recorded hurricane in the southern hemisphere was recorded last year. We can change what will happen.

Here are some simple things everyone can do no matter what they believe. They would save a little money and help us all have cleaner air and water. What's the harm?
Compact fluorescent light bulbs: These energy-efficient bulbs cost less than $4 and are produced by major corporations like GE. If every household in America switched five regular light bulbs for five fluorescent bulbs, it would be the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the highways for a full year.
Outdoor solar lighting: These yard or patio lights cost less than $20, and they don't burn any electricity or produce any CO2.
Programmable thermostats: Though these thermostats cost from $50 to $100, they can actually cut your heating and cooling costs. Set the setting so it's a little bit cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer when you're not in the house. A difference of 2 degrees can reduce a home's CO2 emissions by up to 9 percent over the course of a year.
Air filters: Changing the air filters in your heating and cooling systems regularly can knock 2 percent off of your CO2 output each year.
Electric hot water heater blanket: Hot water heaters use a lot of energy and generate a lot of CO2. A blanket costs less than $18 and can cut your home's CO2 emissions by almost 4 1/2 percent.
Appliances. When you're shopping for major home appliances, look for the Energy Star label.

I think to a certain point these stages of melting could be the same. But 5 thousand years ago, the ice caps only melted a little. Today, whole glaciers and huge chunks of the ice caps are gone. I really think that much of the earth's warming is caused by mankind.

Yes, the cause was the same - an increase in green house gases. However, previous heating and melting we natural processes, caused largely by volcanic activity. The present increase in C02 is caused by humans burning fossil fuels. The amount of C02 we have put into the atmosphere FAR exceedes anything that could presently come from nature. And we have the power to stop it.
The poster above, incidentally, doesn't know how to read his chart. The climate change in that chart proves my point - the increase in temp is dramatic and parallels the development of the automobile.
EDITED: It still amazed me that people deny global warming. There is not a single serious climate scientist on the planet that denies the heating of the earth and the resultant castrophe. We can observe it right now with our own eyes. I just don't get people - just cause you don't believe it doesn't make it go away.
Things are going to get very bad this century. Very bad indeed.

Global warming is sketchy at best. Below is a link taking you to a NASA chart showing the temperature change from 1880 to 2005. Since 1880 the earth's temperature has risen less than 7/10 of 1 degree C. See for yourself here: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2005/2005cal_fig1.gif
There are numerous charts all over the internet showing the same. The fact that people choose to ignore the facts of these charts shows that they have an agenda to convince the masses of something that really is not happening.
In fact here's a link to a secular scientific article that shows the earth was actually warmer in the past than it is today.
http://www.msu.edu/course/isp/203/raeburn_old/fulltext/class9.pdf
And here's an article from a Harvard University study that says: "Such claims have now been sharply contradicted by the most comprehensive study yet of global temperature over the past 1,000 years. A review of more than 240 scientific studies has shown that today's temperatures are neither the warmest over the past millennium, nor are they producing the most extreme weather - in stark contrast to the claims of the environmentalists.
The review, carried out by a team from Harvard University, examined the findings of studies of so-called "temperature proxies" such as tree rings, ice cores and historical accounts which allow scientists to estimate temperatures prevailing at sites around the world.
The findings prove that the world experienced a Medieval Warm Period between the ninth and 14th centuries with global temperatures significantly higher even than today."

I hope that helps...

The last time the ice caps melted it caused an ice age. If they melt enough it will flood every major city on the coast. Our current temperatures on earth cannot be explained by any natural cycle, we are off the charts, the earth has'nt been this warm in the last 60 thousand years.

you may be correct, some scientists believe that it has happened before and that the earth is getting warmer it is just a small step to another ice age and even if all the ice on earth does melt the world will not be coverd in water just more than what is right now i think i heard about a mile or so higher which if you think about it isnt that much so global warming may be only a small problem to a bigger one hope that helps

Please, please be careful what you listen to on TV. If you are truly concerned research it for your self. You will find that it is more of hype then a true concern. Never mind what these modern age hippies tell you. If you will look back at how we have logged the changing of the earth. This is more of a cycle or change. Nothing ever stays the same if we drove 10,000,000,000 or 1 the earth is still going to change in tempture. I am unsure how old you are, but do you remember back in the 70's they thought we where going to have another ice age? The fear was on about that everyone scared about that back then. Now it has shifted now since the ENTIRE planet has only raised 1 degree. You have some whacked out scientist and modern hippies tell you we have cause a global warming.
Again be careful what you see!

That is a very interesting perspective. I believe Global Warming is occurring. Look at the other signs that the earth is giving us. It is said that 2007 will be the hottest year on record.
