We use Fancy Feast at our clinic to tempt the sick kitties who don't feel like eating!
At home, my four kitties eat Iams adult dry, with occasional Pounce treats.
What's with the low rating for everybody? Who is doing that and why?

There are differing opinions on what cat foods are best, but I'm basing my opinion on the science of cat biology. I used to feed my cat only dry food, with a little bit of canned food once a week as a treat. She ended up becoming deathly ill and I ended up taking her to an emergency animal hospital for treatment of dehydration, constipation and pancreatitis. The doctors there gave me a good lesson in cat biology and the proper nutrition. Basically, here's the story. Domestic cats are descendants of the African wild cat, which is a desert animal. Even though domestic cats have lived in different environments for many, many years, their biological makeup has remained the same as the desert-dwelling African wild cat. Since there's not an abundance of water in the desert, these cats have never been huge drinkers and they've gotten their water mostly from their food sources. Domestic cats are exactly the same. They don't drink enough water, so they depend on their food source to give them water, and dry food just doesn't have it. A diet of dry food increases the risks of dehydration, constipation, urinary problems, and I'm sure a whole host of other health problems. After a very expensive lesson (more than $2,000) due to my cat's illness, I immediately switched her to a healthy canned food. My vet told me to find a food that lists, as the first three ingredients, meat and/or water -- no grains, by-products or fillers. After trying a few foods, I settled on Tiki Cat, a human-grade food that has none of the ingredients that are unhealthy. Of the several brands I tried, my kitty loves this one the best -- in fact, she eats with such enthusiasm, it's actually fun to watch! The most important thing for you to do is to read labels. All of the cat foods have vitamins, so you don't have to be so concerned about that. The biggest concern, like somebody else here said, is the quality of the ingredients. If you feed your cat the right food, you'll actually notice how much healthier and vibrant he is. And a bonus is that you probably won't have to spend so much for vet bills!

Fancy Feast is a low-quality cat food and is quite pricey in those small cans.
You have created a "finicky" cat. You can switch to Natural Balance canned foods which are high quality, have many different "flavors" - chicken, turkey, venison, fish and salmon. I use those with my cats. If you have a bunch of cats you soon learn that cats eat when they are hungry and should not be allowed to "turn up their noses" at the wholesome food you supply. NB isn't the only good canned food it's just that the variety is good - some of my cats like certain formulations better than others. I may only serve the fish formulations once a week as fish is not particularly good for cats.
Your cats can safely fast for 24 hours (thirty-six if they are not extremely overweight). Even if they eats as little as one tbl a day for a few days they will be OK. You will probably be surprised at how readily they will take to a new food when that's all that is offered. You can also feel secure in feeding them a wholesome food without by-product meat, too much fish, aritficial flavorings, etc.

I have 2 cats, and my older cat is 4. We adopted him from an older couple who used a "feeder". We took him to the vet, and he weighed in at just a little over 17 pounds. The vet suggested Purina ONE, because it helps with weight control. In the 3 years that we've had him, he's been on that food consistently, and isn't the same cat. He's more playful, a lot more active, and has dropped from 17 pounds to right under 10 pounds. With our kitten, we feed her Pro Plan Kitten Chicken and Rice food and Pro Plan Kitten canned food. Both cats do extremely well on their respective foods. You are lucky, because I had tried Fancy Feast before using the Purina ONE, and my cat didn't like it.

We buy Wellness products (both wet and dried), as well as NutroMax, Paul Newman's, Merrick and others that contain no corn fillers. These brands are better than Iams, Fancy Feast and Science Diet for normal cats and kittens, who don't have severe kidney failure or other medical problems. They can be bought at gourmet pet stores, and sometimes in limited quantities at the larger health food stores and sometimes even Pet Smart or Petco.

I feed my cats Friskies canned "Beef and Salmon in Gravy" and premium canned food like Eukenuba and Spa. I switch them every other day - Friskies one day and premium the next, etc. - otherwise it will be just too expensive. The one year old gets dry kibble (Eukenuba or Purina) also since he is growing but I also give a half a handful to the 8 yr old for his teeth. I watch out for the ash content of every cat food I buy - the lower the better. Both cats appear to thrive on their diet (Thank God).

Fresh Iams dry food and a Little Iams tinned food once a day. Use a premium food if you can. Your cat will be healthier and you'll have less cost at the vet in the future. It only cost a few Penny's more per day but it is well worth it...

I usually buy IAMS or Science Diet. If you want to change your cats food, try mixing in small amounts of another food. Start with smaller amounts and gradually add more until it is all your cats are eating...you have to do it gradually over time or it will not work.

I feed my cats exclusively Purina Nine Lives dry cat food. You really should feed your cat dry food, because eating soft food all the time leads to gum disease. The dry food keeps tartar cleaned off their teeth and promotes healthy gums. If you do not get your cat to eat dry food, you will have serious health problems with them if their teeth get bad. Take my word you do not want to go through the ordeal of a cat with a bad tooth. It is not fun. Please try to get your cat off the soft food.
