I have a recurring neck spams that occurs roughly every 1 to 2 months and lasts a week. I also suffer from severe tightness and pain in my shoulder and neck area at certain times, especially when on the computer for an extended period of time.

try stretching your neck, put some warm compresses at your neck and shoulder area, try correcting your posture while at the computer.
Heres a site where you can view the correct posture

or neck stretches, click on any of the stretches and it will demonstrate how to do it...

if it continues you might want to go see a massage therapist, to release any muscles spasm that you might have in that area.
Good luck ^i^

Sounds like a trip to the orthopedist is in order. Sitting in front of the computer all day is really bad for the neck. You also may be getting degenerative disc disease, basically the discs dry up and don't cushion your neck like they should. When it gets bad you have pain going into your arm and down to your fingers some times. It's hell and I only hope you situation is merely tired muscles.

Try this. It is going to sound weird but it works. Sit in a straight chair and raise the left arm up as high as it will go and then do the right arm. One arm will go up higher than the other. Start with the arm that goes the highest. Raise that arm up as high and have it go as hard as it can for fifteen seconds and then rest for thirty seconds. Do that routine twice more always pushing the arm up as high and hard as you can for the fifteen seconds. Upon completion do the same routine with the opposite arm. Upon completion of that turn the head and neck in all directions. The neck should have less pain and more mobility. Next sitting in the chair again turn the body to the left as far as you can and then the right. One side will go further than the other. Start with that side and turn to that side as hard and far as you can for fifteen seconds and then rest for thirty seconds. Do that twice more and then go to the opposite side and do that routine three times as hard and far as you can for each of the fifteen second sessions. Now move the neck around and there should be more movement and less pain. Lastly sitting in the chair turn the head to the side that is not in pain as far and hard as you can for fifteen seconds. Rest for thirty seconds and repeat that cycle twice more. After the last rest session turn to the side that is in pain and restricted for fifteen seconds as hard and far as you can. Rest for thirty seconds and then repeat that cycle twice more. The neck should move more freely and be in less pain. Do this entire routine twice a day or more if possible until there is no more pain or restrictions.

Have you been to the dr yet?

Try using Motrin every 8 hrs and Tylenol every 4. Seems that you have some inflamation.

You really should see a Dr, tho.

Ice and anti-inflammatory medication will help. Arrange your computer space ergonomically and break up your computer time by doing some stretches and moving around a bit.
