I have heard that we can get back 3,000 dollars this year from 2003 when we file our taxes.

No. Whoever told you that is an idiot, or thought you are one.

Whatever do you suppose you would get that for? I'll assume you have an ordinary tax situation. So, if you qualify for something you didn't know about until the idiot spoke, then you would qualify in all the years since too, eh? But there's one more good reason to re-read my first sentence:

It's too late to file anything at all for 2003, except a corrected return if so mandated during an audit. Before 2006 ended, you could still have filed a corrected return for 2003 to claim any benefit you were unaware of back then. Earned Income Credit (for parents who earned fairly low amounts) perhaps. But the moment 2007 came, it became too late. Since the idiot telling you this indicated you should wait until filing this year (for 2006), he neatly put you in this situation of, if he's right you can't file for it because it's too late and if he's wrong, well, you can't file for it anyway!

No. Whoever told you that is an idiot, or thought you are one. It would be too late even if he had hold of something there.

Though maybe it's just you trying to start a wild rumor on the Internet? I hope not...

Not true!

But....How about a FREE $30, 40, 50, or even 60?

It's the repeal of the telephone tax and if you are single you get the $30, and for each person on your return, you get $10 more, up to a maximum of $60. This is a ONE-TIME refund for all Americans who had telephone service between 2003 and 2005. The refund is part of your 2006 Form 1040 tax return.

Wouldn't that be great?

You can amend returns for three years, so 2003 is still open until April 17, 2007. If you were due a credit and didn't take it, then go to a tax preparer and see about it.

But no, there is no general credit available to everyone for 2003. There is a telephone excise tax credit of $30.00 to $60.00 available to most people, that may be what started this rumor.
