Hmm. . .you could jazz it up by sauteing peppers, onions, mushrooms, garlic in some olive oil. . .add a little wine. . .and use chicken instead of red meat.
Sprinkle with freshly shredded parmesan.
It'll knock her socks off ;)
Seriously. . .lol. . .no matter what it tastes like. . .she'll appreciate your gesture.

From a jar... That's craziness. Here's my HOMEMADE recipe:
Spaghetti Sauce
-- ingredients
1 can (28 oz) whole tomatoes
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 onion (medium dice)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
2 Tbs olive oil
2 tsp dried oregano
1 Tbs dried basil
1 tsp fennel seed
2 bay leaves (one if large)
2 lbs ground beef
salt (to taste)
pepper (to taste)
-- instructions
1. In a large Dutch oven over medium high heat, sauté the onion in olive oil until translucent. Add the ground beef and brown. If there is a ton of fat in the bottom of the pot, drain some off - otherwise leave it: that's the flavor!
2. Add garlic and cook for about a minute - don't burn the garlic. You are cooking to help flavor the beef and onion, and to take the rawness out of the garlic.
3. Dump in the tomatoes: sauce, crushed, diced, and paste. Stir completely - don't leave pockets of paste in the sauce. It should be homogeneous. Bring to a boil.
4. Drop the heat to low, and add basil, oregano, fennel seed, and bay leaves. Stir again.
5. Simmer with a lid on (slightly askew) for one hour. Check seasoning - add salt and pepper as needed. Let rest for an hour with the lid on - this will deepen the flavor.
6. If you plan on eating this tonight, bring back-up to heat. Otherwise, prepare for the fridge or freezer.
Serve over pasta - preferably spaghetti noodles
**Note: this sauce is oh so much better if it's not served the same day. Ideally, this is the kind of thing you make on Sunday and eat later in the week. How great would that be? A homemade dinner on Tuesday, that only required you re-heat something.

Make sure you cook the noodles el dente. Be sure the water is boiling first, then check the noodles frequently after they start to get soft, and take them out of the water as soon as they are ALMOST done. Rinse in cold water so they quit cooking. Mushy noodles will be the ruin of your dinner!
If you want to make it easy, just buy some Paul Newman's spaghetti sauce in the jar. It's very good. Or if you want to attempt your own sauce, here's an easy recipe:
2 cans Italian tomatoes
1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste Italian
1 med. white onion chopped
Directions:
Blend Italian tomatoes and onion in blender then add sauce and paste. Heat in a saucepan. Add a little more Italian Seasoning, or basil and oregano to your own taste. If you want, add some cooked ground beef or pre-made meatballs. (get them at your grocers, sometimes you'll find them in the meat department, sometimes frozen)
Then be sure to buy some fresh parmesan cheese and good fresh french bread. Good Luck!

I cheat and use the store stuff, but everyone loves mine. I just take lean ground chuck (not round) and brown it in a pot. Then I drain the grease and pour in a bottle of Prego (I prefer the extra mushroom type). About 1lb of meet for one jar of sause. I add a little more sause if I need to feed more. This itself is good but I usually add some general italian seasonings (it comes in a bottle labled italian seasoning) and about a table spoon or so of sugar or splenda. This just gives it a little something extra and makes me feel like I cooked instead of throwing stuff in a pot. Then just let it simmer for a bit, boil some noodles (I preffer angle hair) and serve! And don't for get the Parmasan cheese!
