I think the popularity of Anne Rice's novels about vampires and other occult figures is behind the surge. They're very well crafted fiction and make the lifestyle seem enticing for some. It doesn't appeal to me, but I wouldn't deny to anyone else the right to pursue happiness in whatever way they please, so long as they harm no one else and don't break any laws. I shudder to think how difficult it must be for them to get mainstream jobs, but maybe it's worth it to them.

Yes, there was a large Vampire convention in New York a few years back. They are an interesting group and have their own "Vampire Bible". Many go so far as to have their teeth capped to give them fangs and avoid the sun as much as possible.

It was more than ten years ago. People were claiming to be vampires in the late eighties in Toronto. I just put it down as more modern weirdness

I've always considered certain people to be "spiritual vampires". I've known people that seemed very draining to be around - afterwards, it just seemed like I had no joy left in me. I try to stay away from them as much as possible.

I've never (to my knowledge) met any other kind of vampire.

Actually my ex-roommate was a psychic vampire. And I don't think he even knew it. But spending any time in his presence left me completely unnerved and physically drained. I used to make dinner and hide in my room with my cats because he got home after I did and I couldn't stand to be in his physical presence. It made me too edgy.

They are real insofar as they drink human blood. Isn't it obvious that the reason they ever emerged in the first place is because of our societal preoccupation with fantasy and the incessant reinforcement of this fantasy upon the weak-minded?

They say that Russian vampires are purple on the inside, though the truth is that all Russians are purple on the inside from consuming their basic diet of borscht, beetroot soup.
