Baking it is a good idea. I have had this happen, too. It is either because the potatoes were overcooked and/or there was too much liquid added. The only way to "rescue" them is to bake them and top them with a little cheddar or parmesan. Won't be exactly the same, but still good.

Good luck.

next time you make your mashed potatoes, when the potatoes are ready to mashed, drain them then put them back them in boiler again put on burner again turn heat down some and watch to make sure all the liquid has absorbed, then put some butter in if like, smash the potatoes, then add some milk ,cream which ever to your taste don't forget a little salt, good luck on your next try,OH, you can even add a clove or two of garlic with your potatoes as you are to boil, adds a great flavor, when you smash them, good luck

If you have any instant potatoes, you know, the flakes that come in a box, you can add about 1/4 cup at a time, stirring in completely before adding the next 1/4 cup if needed. I don't know what to do if you don't have any...good luck!

When life gives you potato puree make cream of potato soup.

My chef tops his with cheddar, bacon bits, chives & a dollop of sour cream and calls it baked potato soup.

Next time use less milk and whip with a hand mixer... mmm...

The baking trick does work. I put some cheese on top too.

Or, if you have a box of potato flakes around, shake some of those in and beat them in well. Nobody will ever know the difference. (Trust me, I've done it, and my husband swore they were my best batch...little did he know my little trick.)

Whip in some eggs, and then bake it. The eggs will stiffen it up to make a potato casserole. Or you can make potato pancakes (latkes) out of them.

I consistently use my electric mixer for mashed potatoes. do purely not positioned it on the utmost velocity first. I mash mine purely somewhat until now turning the device on. Scrape the bowl each so often, and wait until they're the consistency you like.
