I am suffering from the same thing and saw a doctor yesterday. It is a throat infection for which you do need anti-biotics. To releive the soreness, I suggest you consume cough drops.

what a strange receptionist - they definitely aren't trained doctors and should not be handing out antibiotics!!! Antibiotics might not help you and should not be taken unless they are really necessary and could be dangerous - they may interact with other medication you're taking or you could be allergic to them. A dr would not prescribe antibiotics without seeing you, esp. not on the basis of what a receptionist tells them!!! You're best to call nhs direct or to ask a pharmacist (with the benefit of them being able to actually look at your throat). Ask your dr's receptionist for the next available appointment with the dr anyway in case you don't get better before then - either way the dr should probably know if their receptionist is handing out tablets!!! Try not to worry too much - it is probably just an infection and you will be feeling better soon. I think hot drinks can sometimes help because they kill the bacteria, but phone nhs direct or see a pharmacist to be safe. Hope you feel better soon xxx

Go see the doctor. Don't count on what some medical receptionist has to say. Yeah it is a sore throat but what kind? What causes it? You need to know these things.

The bit to which you are referring is called the uvula.
Gargle with soluble paracetemol or aspirin, or failing that gargle with some salt water. are your tonsils sore at all? whenever i get tonsilitis my uvula swells right up (last time it was actually sitting on my tongue!). Keep up your fluids and if it gets worse go to the doctor, though they'll probably just give you antibiotics - the docs answer to everything!
I find that warm ribena is good also :)

That dangly thing is called an uvula. It is used to block passage to the throat when required. It shouldn't be swollen, so you must visit a doctor. A woman on reception isn't qualified to diagnose, especially on the phone.

something is probably infected. We don't know exactly what, or what the infective agent is. I would suggest first, gargle with warm (preferably hot) salt water. Alternatively a diluted mixture of hydrogen peroxide might help. Antibiotic means against life. I would avoid that if possible.

It sounds like tonsillitis to me and they have probably just got a Dr to prescribe a basic antibiotic for you to save you and them time. You won't be picking up the tablets, just the prescription form.
Pick up the prescription and if you are unsure, ask your pharmacist what you have been given as they will be able to explain.

You should not be prescribed antibiotics unless this problem has existed for a few days at least.
