I am really looking for any information dealing with rentals, particularly townhouse rentals, rentals that allow pets (I have a 120 pd choc lab very well trained), the good and bad areas of Columbia as well as any positive or negative things about Columbia in general, resturants, and or the surrounding areas of Columbia that may also be nicer places to live. I've heard that Ellicott City is also very nice. Any information about anything would be greatly appreciated.

Owings Mills (Raven Town!!!!!) is a very cool place too! It's located west of Maryland. About 20 mins away from Columbia. We have two regional parks where you can walk your beautiful dog. These parks are near New Towne (Owings Mills).

Both Columbia and Ellicott City are good choices, with mostly good neighborhoods (I can't think of a single bad block in Columbia but I am sure there is one tucked in there somewhere). Rents will be lower in Ellicott City than in Columbia but Columbia has more restaurants and entertainment choices. Both have good parks and recreational space for you and your dog. In the DC area in general (and technically that's considered DC even though the drive to Columbia is over 45 minutes in light traffic), it's hard to rent a house when you have a dog if you are going through a property manager, so stick with a rental through a private homeowner. The previous poster's suggestion of checking Craigslist is a good idea as is the Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun.

Columbia's a decent place to live. Nicely situated between Washington and Baltimore. I'd have to know where you are working to let you know if it's a good choice.

There aren't many bad neighborhoods in Columbia. I'd look in Craigslist to see what rentals are going for.
