I have been having a bill collector call for my brother in law...he has never lived with us, nor does he live in this state. My husband says that they are just looking up our last name, which isn't common where we live, and exasperating every opportunity just to find him. Can this happen...or is he using my phone number to deter them from finding him? I am really upset about this and all they said was that they will remove my number from their file. We don't speak to my brother in law and haven't for some time now...I know what state he lives in, but other than that...no clue! Do you think I should call these people back and give them whatever information I have or just leave it alone!

My mom used to be a bill collector and she would call their friends and family to find out about a person. The only problem is, is that more than one person is working on the same file. That's probably why you keep getting called and are getting asked the same questions over and over. Your brother in law might have put your name/your husband's name on a credit card application as a person to call if they can't get ahold of him. If they keep calling, tell them to make a note on the file that you don't know where he is and to stop calling. The only bad part is, even if you change your phone number, they will still be able to find you if they look hard enough.

If you have told them not to call, and they persist ask to speak to a supervisor when they call again. Explain that you do NOT know where he is and if you ever do find out you'd be happy to call them. They can't call you after you tell them not to.

I think your husband is wrong in that they just got your name from the phone book. More than likely when he applied for credit, he listed your husband and you as references, as far as people who would know how to contact him.

Good luck!

send them a certified letter telling them to stop calling you and that the person that you are trying to contact is not living at this address. My neighbor was getting calls for his brother, they began to threat him. I told him to do the same thing guess what the ignored the letter "it showed through certified mail they received it" called again and again. He filed a suit against them and won 8k for it. Just be prepared.

take their name and number down and tell them that if they don't stop calling you that you will put a huge harrassment case against them for disturbing you, since you have continously told them that your brother is not there and and you do not know where he is and they note that on the account, you tell them to remove your number from their file and they don't and they continue to harrass you and you have every right to bring action against them for them doing this to you because it is bringing emotional strain on you and your family, I have seen it done

Tell them you do not want them to call you any more. If they still do, they can be fined for it.

Its not your job to track down your BIL for them.
