I think that may be the biggest insult to parents. Clearly dogs are NOT likely children, for obvious reasons.

I still don't understand. Yeah you have to feed dogs and clean up poop, but seriously.. feeding a dog means dumping a cup of food into a bowl. Feeding a baby means preparing a bottle and food and taking time to feed them. When is the last time a parent decided they needed a break and just put their baby in a kennel for 12 hours and left? To go to the doctor, a dog just jumps in the car. For a baby, you have to pack a diaper bag, put on coat, put in car seat, etc etc. I just don't see how you can say that pets are like children.

I don't think the person who wrote this was trying to bring up not being able to have children.

I know people who would rather have pets than children.

The annoying thing about people with pets is this line "These are my kids......and they're spoiled!!!"

These are also the same kind of people that when their pet bites your kid, they can't understand that children are more important then pets.

If my dog, who I love very much, bit a kid, I would shoot it in front of the parents. I don't care what the circumstances are. I don't care if their kid was poking the dog with a stick. People are more important than animals. The reason I have that opinion is because I am a person. If dogs could reason and have opposable thumbs, they would feel the same way.

In terms of loving and caring and training, particularly for older people, all they are saying is they love their animal companions. There is no reason to get upset when people can also talk about loving their iPods or the latest shade of makeup.

At least in English, I know of no other way to express this close relationship with another creature. There are many serious issues that people can take issue with to feel insulted by, don't go looking for one that isn't any reflection on you or yours.
Who does it hurt if a dog is mentioned in an obit,ir it was important to the person in life, why not mention that at the end?

Did it ever occur to you that maybe some of these people couldn't have children? I am dealing with infertility and it kills me every day to not have a baby. My cats are the closest thing I have right now. They are cuddled and rocked as much as a cat can be. I realize they are not "real" children and that an acutal baby requires much more care and preparation, but my cats are all I have right now and they are my "babies".

I hate it. I even know a lady to treats her dogs better than her kids, who are grown. The dogs come first and are always more important.
I always treat my pets "like" family. They aren't kids. It isn't the same. I love them so much but they aren't my children.
I do sort of understand for childless people but they truly don't get that there is no comparrison. Yes, I know they love and feed and cherish their pets, but it is still not the same, not even close.
A child is so much more than a pet. I would run into a burning building for my dog, but he will still never come close to my sons.

U have a right to your oppinion but sense u asked I'll give u mine. No I don't think it's stupid or ignorent I think it's quite nice. Animals are living creatures to and they have been on the planet way longer then us. Im 16 years old I love animals and kids equally I don't prefer one more then the other. I love them both. I have a cat and a rat and I love them both very much. I give them alot of attention and I make them meals. To me they are part of my family go ahead and sy im ignorent because nothing u will say will ever hurt me. PS- Like meany other answers mentioned what if the person not capable of producing a child sure theres adoption but it just wouldn't be the same in my oppinion. Animals are like children u have to feed them water them cleanup after them and give them attention.

LOL.

Get a pet that you really care for and then come back and ask this question.

My 1-year old lab, Sirius, IS my baby. Everyone around me knows this and they have to agree that he truly IS my baby.

He is MORE dependant on me than my 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter.

He goes through seperation anxiety everytime I leave him.
He goes with me whenever possible.
I have to buy him toys, treats, bedding, personal products.
I have to teach him manners, or he would not be welcome most places I go.
I have to feed him on a schedule.
I have to bathe him on a regular basis.
He has a bedtime.
He has playtime.
He sulks, pouts, cries, whines, and gets angry as well as happy and sad.
He needs hugs and medical treatment as well as vaccinated.
He needs a special restraint for the car.

enough said?

no, this is not insulting. People call their pets children for a variety of different reasons...perhaps they are old and alone now because their children are grown, perhaps they couldnt have children, perhaps they are really close to their pets. Its obvious that pets are not literally their children but its a term of endearment.

No worse than when parents treat the kids like pets...
"Look how well Johnny can read...read Johnny read!"

Both make me feel a little icky. But really, pets are like kids, that never grow up. You always get the opportunity to clean up their poo, because they'll never potty train. You always get to fix their food and you can't go on holiday without finding a babysitter. So see? It is just like children.

Why does that bother you?
There are many people who are better pet parents than some parents of children.
Some people love dogs and not children, and some people never want to have children/can't have children and their dogs are the closest they will ever get.

I think it's silly, but not insulting. What I find insulting is the people who honestly believe they should get tax deductions for having pets. Kids are so much more expensive (and become future taxpayers) and you really *need* the additional tax breaks anymore just to afford them.
