I made 20000 last year, do I qualify for receiving the child tax credit? How does that work? I have one child and do qualify for the EIC. Oh,and on the 1040 line 46, do i write what's on line 43 if i don't have anything on 44 and 45? Any free tax advice would be nice

On Form 1040 for 2006, Line 46 is the tax you owe. If there is nothing on Line 44 or 45, then there is a zero on Line 46. But Line 44 should be zero if you owe no tax, don't leave it blank.

From your information, you owe no tax if Line 44 is zero. Therefore you have no Child Tax Credit since it is a credit that reduces your tax. But compute the Additional Child Tax Credit, Line 68, using Form 8812, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Form 8812:

Yes you should qualify for child tax credit(if child is under 17), just not the additional child tax credit.

You can get your taxes done for free at a VITA site. Volunteers receive training, and prepare taxes. Most sites can file electronically.

Check irs.gov for more info on the program, and on finding a site near you. Most sites operate from February to mid-April.
