Klee was a modernist that valued the directness and pureness of children's art. He also was a European interested in emblems of botany and astronomy, physics and music. He was especially interested in music and believed that 18th century counterpoint could be directly translated into gradations of color, value and repetition. He stacked forms, made them appear as a fanned out deck of cards. He attempted to freeze time in a musical composition. He also at times transferred this interpretation to plants and flower motifs. Many books are available at the public library on Paul Klee as his is a leading modernist painter of the early 1900's.
