Can anyone from the DC area tell me what it is like there Memorial Day Weekend? Is it as crowded as July 4th? My in-laws went July 4th a few years ago and said it was so crowded they couldn't see or do anything. We were thinking about coming for Memorial Day but will it be hectic? I understand that there will probably be observances and such and that is fine with us, we would love to see those take place (and allow our 10 year old son to see those).

Thanks!

Plan to ride public transportation or get a bus tour through an agency or hotel. Traffic and parking SUCKS in DC....particularly during Memorial Day Week-end due to all the patriotic functions.

It probably won't be as crowded as July 4th, or as hot, but it will still be crowded. And it could still get pretty hot. I'm sure that there will be ceremonies at most of the memorials and Arlington Nat'l. Cemetery (although if you would like to see those then they could be interesting). Actually the good thing about Memorial Day is that all the school trips/cherry blossom visitors will be already over (those are in March-April) but it won't quite be full summer crowds. However, it is a holiday weekend and stuff. So basically it will probably be fairly crowded but not as crowded as July 4th.

It's not as crowded as 4th of July, but the roads are packed with Harley's due the the Rolling Thunder event that occurs on Memorial Day where thousands of bikers descend on the Mall.

I was there five years ago for the twenty year anniversary of the Vietnam memorial and I couldn't believe the traffic worst I've ever seen. The streets are really messed up. In New York the streets are numbered IN ORDER. In DC there are letters and they aren't in order nor do they run the same way. On top of all that you will have all the new people we elected driving around with blank looks on their faces muttering, "where am I".

a great form of loose stuff in D.C. And it quite is advantageous climate, relish it! The Mall is the excellent, circulate to the memorials. The Smithsonians are super, and all loose. Even the zoo, that's extra out. Have a picnic on the Tidal Basin, splurge and journey the paddle boats!

It is usually very crowded, especially becuase of the monuments to our fallen soldiers. I was in the Army, 3rd infantry division, and we came up to march in the parade back in 04 (we were in Iraq in 05) but it was very well worth it. The people that you see, the Vet's especially make the trip well worth your time.

Very quiet depending where you go. The bikers come to town. That is a lot of fun.
