The bible defines Christianity. It is the test for what is of God and what is not. I am perplexed firstly at the ammount of people that call themselves Christian without accepting the word and secondly by the ammount of people that see following it has somehow being a "radical" christian. Anyone who claims Christ should accept the bible as the word of God and in that case its "fundamental" principals should be followed without compromise...doesnt this by definition make ALL christians "fundemental"?

Even by accepting the symbolic parts of scripture you are accepting the fundamentals of the bible and god's word...so all christians are fundamentalists. There are parts of the bible that are hiighly symbolic in nature...revelation would be the best example. however to believe things like noah and jonah are just "symbolic tales" is not only doubtful of the word of god but pretty much blasphemous

Strange people who truly believe in God as Lord and think He actually wants people to obey Him. Also who believe that repentance actually means to stop living in sin. They also believe that Jesus has purchased them with His shed blood and so He owns them and they owe Him a life of thanksgiving. They actually delight in serving their Savior and believe Him even over their own hearts. They distrust themselves and so flee to Christ and don't care if someone were to offer them the whole world to deny Jesus. Weirdo's I tell ya.
A peculiar bunch they are.

No, all Christians are not Fundamental. The Fundamentalist takes the bible to be literal truth; no symbolism, no interpretation, no allegory. Not all Christians view it this way.

Taking the bible in its entirety as "the word of God" is a difficult task for some, as the book has been through so many translations and editing jobs. Some bibles include the Book of Amos. Some don't. The Book of Ruth, Song of Songs, the Gospel of Thomas...these are just a few of what is categorized as apocryphal writings. An often cited example of translation difficulty is the word "love". The bible we now have was once translated from Greek; a language with four different words with four different meanings that we put under the one word "love". How many other words follow this pattern? There is even a discrepancy on the translation of the Hebrew word for "virgin" in reference to Mary.

All of this adds up to create division upon division within Christianity, and the ones who do not challenge any of this (or the literalness thereof) are the Fundamentals.

I think I get what you're saying that maybe we've given an inaccurate spin of the word "fundamental."

But the spin being what it is I think just indicates those Christians that take the Bible word-for-word literally as opposed to those that understand parts of it to be symbolic.

No this label usually refers to someone who bases their idea of Christianity on the OT. rather than The NT.

To me these people are more Jews than Christians, but that is just my opinion.
